Ardena Mae Copeland

Ardena Mae was born to Lucille Tennessee (nee Graham) and Richard Fraker on July 24, 1941. In 1945, her dear stepfather David Beetley, Jr. became the man she called “Daddy.”

Mom grew up in the city of Knoxville, but met her sweetheart John R. Copeland in the “country” (Claxton) when he saw her bicycling by his mom’s house. They fell in love and married on July 30, 1961. They created a home, and over the years, four children followed: Denise, Donna, Michelle, and Little John.

A member of Ball Camp Baptist Church, Mom’s days were filled with raising kids and being a homemaker. She also loved reading, needle work, and animals – she often cared for a menagerie of raccoons, cats, and dogs. But most of all, Mom, Dad’s “buddy,” loved being outside with him. Over the years, the family gardened, put up hay, raised cattle, and harvested tobacco and crops together. It was during this time spent together that she taught her children resilience and independence.

Preceded in death by her infant sister, Gloria Ann; and parents Lucille and David Beetley. Survived by her faithful, patient, and loving husband of 61 years, John R. Copeland; brother Gary S. Beetley (Kate); and children: S. Denise Copeland, Donna F. Copeland, C. Michelle Hoefer (Carl), John R. Copeland (Jenny); and six smart, beautiful granddaughters: Holly & Heather Haney; Clara & Lily Hoefer; and Kinsey & Cagney Copeland.

Over the years, Mom experienced some health issues, but we are thankful she is finally pain-free, and that her mind and body are whole again.

We are grateful to Brenda England (who shared love and laughs with Mom), Dr. Karen Rhea, Sarah Stegall, Terri Ruff, and the teams at Truewood, Caris Healthcare, and Diversicare of Oak Ridge.

Visitation is 2:00 – 4:00 pm on Sunday, October 9 at Weaver Funeral Home, 5815 Western Avenue, Knoxville. The graveside service is 11:00 am on Monday, October 10 at Zion Baptist Church, 2710 Clinton Highway, Powell. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your favorite animal shelter, that will make Mom smile.
