Allen W. McPherson

Allen W. McPherson, age 88, of Knoxville, Tennessee passed away on Saturday, October 1, 2022. Allen was born May 5, 1934. He was a proud graduate of old Austin High, class of 51. From 1960 thru 1964, Allen was the first African American in the US Air Force to supervise an office under the Joints Chief of Staff at the Pentagon. Allen retired a Senior Master Sergeant after 20 years of service. Both were great accomplishments for a black man during that time. He was as proud Vietnam veteran and was awarded the Bronze star. After his military service was completed, he went to work for the US Postal Service and retired after 25 years.

Allen was preceded in death by parents, Catherine and Earl McPherson; sister, Roberta Davidson; brother, Gary and wife, Lillie McPherson; sister-in-law, Sarah McPherson; brother-in-law, Hayes Hall; grandson, James Overton. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Larthreta Ann McPherson; children, Keith (Mary Alice) McPherson, Kerrie Haywood, Pat Overton, Fredrick "Fred" McPherson; 5 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; brother, Carlton McPherson; brother-in-law, John (Lisa) Davidson; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Anna and John Anderson; sisters-in-law, Lela Love and Angelisa Jones; sister by love, Willie Mae Kyle; several nieces, nephews and a host of family.

A visitation for Allen will be held Tuesday, October 11, 2022 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Berry Lynnhurst Funeral Home with a celebration of life to follow at 7:00 PM. A committal service will occur Wednesday, October 12, 2022 at 12:30 PM at East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, 2200 E Gov. John Sevier Hwy, Knoxville, TN 37920, meeting at the cemetery at 12:15 PM.
