Vesna Ljubuncic

She was born in Slavonski Brod, Croatia. At that time, her parents, Hajrudin Djulbic and Marija (née Kastelancic), lived in Derventa, Bosnia where they were elementary school teachers.

Early in her childhood, the entire family moved to Sarajevo, where Vesna completed her education and earned a degree in law from the Faculty of Law at the University of Sarajevo.

For four years, Vesna worked as corporate lawyer in UNIS-Engineering where she met her husband, Jasmin.

After getting married, she passed the Bar Exam, and while raising two sons, she built a promising career in the legal field. After only three years, she was elected as a Judge at the Municipal Court in Sarajevo.

The Bosnian war forced the family to leave Sarajevo in 1992. They spent three years in Sochi, Russia, where Jasmin worked as an engineer on a project building a large seaside resort. During this time, Vesna focused on taking care of her family, while learning a new language and new way of life.

In August 1995, the family immigrated again, this time to Canada, and a new life started for them.

Vesna worked for short periods at Waterloo Public Library, and at TD Bank, before she started a new career in the insurance industry with Cowan Insurance Group, where she spent almost twenty years in the commercial insurance department. Vesna’s work was highly appreciated and her clients loved and admired her. She was adored by her colleagues and she built many life-long friendships.

Vesna enjoyed traveling and took every opportunity to visit somewhere new, whether it be sunny beaches, historical monuments, museums and art galleries, or vibrant cities.

Vesna admired nature, and wildlife, especially marine animals. She loved her puppies and always found time to play with friends’ pets.

She was obsessed with reading, always with a book by her bedside. Her book club meetings were a highlight of her month. Vesna loved gardening and was especially passionate about planting flowers in the early spring and watching them bloom during summer.

Vesna will be remembered as a vibrant, warm, intelligent woman who was cherished by all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband Jasmin, sons Bojan and Vedran, and brother Sasa.

Vesna's family will receive relatives and friends at Westmount Memorial Celebration Centre, 1001 Ottawa St. S., Kitchener, on Sunday, August 28, 2022, where the memorial service will be held in the chapel at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations would be appreciated to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 804 - 2 Lansing Square, Toronto, ON M2J 4P8.
