STEPHENS, Sylvia Doris (nee Owens) – Sylvia died peacefully on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at the age of 96 years. Beloved wife of Harold for 69 years. Cherished mother of daughter Melanie and sons Brian (2009), Murray, Donald and Ronald. Loved grandmother of Crystal (Lazarevich), Jason, Sarah, Clayton, Thomas and Matthew. Great-grandmother of Ava and Harper Lazarevich. Sadly missed by her surviving brother, Albert.
Sylvia was born at Tessier, Saskatchewan, the only daughter of 5 children, and spent her youth in Saskatoon. She was active in church life, beginning as a Sunday school teacher and later in the adult choir in Saskatoon. Sylvia married Harold in 1946 and immediately moved to Kitchener, where she was active with the KW Hospital “pink ladies” for 20 years. She was also a member of the KW Garden Club, as well as the Beaux and Belles Square Dance club for over 50 years, serving as convener of decorations and flower arranging. Sylvia loved flowers, music and people.
Sylvia’s family will receive friends on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, 621 King St. West (accessible from Wellington St, and King St. West via Moore Ave). Funeral Service will be held on Friday morning at 11am in the funeral home chapel, with Rev. Lynne Bandy officiating. A reception will follow at the Ratz-Bechtel Family Centre. Private interment will be held at Memory Gardens. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Memorial Fund of Calvary Memorial United Church.
