1925, Joan was youngest daughter of Joseph and Josephine
McGoey, beloved sister to Tommy, Gerry, Dr. Paul, Fr. Jack, Billy,
Elizabeth and Mary (all deceased). Joan was married to J.Robert (Bob)
Schmalz (deceased in 1995), and devoted mother to John, Erin (and
husband Eric), Kate (and husband Andrew), Meri-Ellen (and husband
Mike) and loving grandmother to Inge (and husband Justin), Matt,
Julia, Gabi, Ali, Chris, Thomas, Megan, Rosaline, Jessica, Martha and Rusty.
Joan’s life reflected her deep faith in God, sense of humour, work
ethic, and love of learning. A graduate of St. Michael’s College,
University of Toronto, at age of 19, Joan partnered with her husband
Bob to operate several K-W area businesses, and then spent 35 years
teaching for the Waterloo Catholic District School Board. In her retirement,
Joan’s passion for education continued with her service to the
Retired Teachers of Ontario and companionship of retired teachers from St.
Mary’s High School. Joan enjoyed spending time with her family,
travelling abroad, giving generously of her prayers and time through
community service, and leading fitness programs for the elderly. Joan
will be remembered as an energetic woman of faith, integrity and
generosity. Heartfelt thanks to the Palliative Care team whose faithful
attention allowed Joan a better quality of life and a peaceful death
while living with family over the past two years. As expressions of

A remembrance celebration in Joan's honour is being held Tues Feb 15
from 2pm to 4pm followed by recitation of the Holy Rosary at a family
home on Northfield Dr. E. Waterloo. Funeral Mass is being held Wed Feb
16 at 2pm at St Mary's Church (Our Lady of Seven Sorrows), 56 Duke St
W in Kitchener with reception to follow at Northfield Dr. E, Waterloo.
