It began as a love story in a small village in Germany 63 years ago, and then two years later Gerhard married Dagmar and they began their family. Six years later, with only a few suitcases and three children, they travelled across the Atlantic and called Canada home.  With limited English, he found work, a home for his family and schooling for his children.
Gerry, has he became known, loved his wife and as the years passed, they were not only husband and wife, but best of friends.
Gerry had many interests, most of which meant spending time with his family,either at home or on the many weekend outings.  He enjoyed working with his hands, from the greasy job of fixing the family car to the rough pieces of wood he turned into intricate works of art, to the endless hours and great pride he took in their new home.  His passion for woodworking mirrored his passion for his family and especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is remembered as a man of physical and emotional strength in his prime.  And though his body had succumbed to the Parkinson's and his mind to the dementia, his heart and his determination could not be taken.
Gerry's work here in his physical body is now complete.  He is free to evolve and free of the weight his physical body was carrying that held his emotions as well.  We must allow ourselves to be gentle observers of our own beings, without judgement, and to just simply observe and acknowledge that the necessary pieces will come naturally together in this time of turbulent emotions.
We remember him as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and as a protector of his family.  His grandchildren and great grandchildren will miss the "big man" they called OPA.  We will all miss him.  We feel his presence and his peace.

I took it in my mind, to wonder, "What was your life like?"
You married your greatest love, had your world destroyed around you, in a world without social hand-outs, you carved out a new world, set a home, and raised a family. 
You secured your happiness in life and extended it through your sons and daughters now going into various generations. For as much as you loved your family, as much as you were a pillar for them, I think that your greatest strength especially, was the wife you took. You took her hand-in-hand over a lifetime...
...each being each others comfort, support, assurance of a dream that everything could only get better along the way. For all the trials, heart-aches and victories that a life time has tossed your way, I think that it must've been absolutely wonderful!
