Born February 25, 1949 to Hilarion and Asunción Sanchez, Victoria was raised in San Francisco de Paula, Havana on her family’s ranch, Las Delicias. Though she was an only child, her childhood was never solitary as she had the kinship of of her cousins and extended family. She would speak of life on Las Delicias often, painting vivid pictures of a place filled with childhood wonder and adventure.
Her family immigrated to the United States after the Cuban Revolution and ultimately settled in Houston, Texas, where she served as both the foundation and voice of a family that was starting over. Victoria began working early in life to help support her family and displayed an enduring work ethic and drive for self improvement. From her early days as a stock clerk, to becoming a skilled hairdresser, administrative assistant, and eventually a real estate broker, Victoria was a consummate professional and served as an example to her children. Despite her many responsibilities, she never missed a special event or failed to be there for family. We are still looking for the red cape or golden lasso that endowed her with this ability.
Victoria was a woman of many talents and interests. Chief among those passions was her love for music and dance. She was a natural dancer with a grace and fluidity of movement that few possess. To see her dance was to watch her soul speak. She was always the first one on and last one off the dance floor, breaking the ice at any party and inspiring her children to take up dance in equal measure.
And yet her heart had more to offer, for family was the cornerstone of Victoria’s life, and her love for them knew no bounds. She loved fiercely and took immense pride in being a wife, mother and grandmother. Her family was her world, and she cherished each and every moment spent with them. Whether it was a simple family dinner or a holiday gathering, her love for her family shone brightly. Her greatest joy was in seeing her loved ones happy and together.
We will remember Victoria for her endless capacity to love. She was selfless and giving person who poured her whole heart into others. Whether it was a listening ear, a comforting meal, or heartfelt hug, Victoria was always there to provide support to those in need. She had a unique ability to make people feel welcome and cared for - leaving an indelible mark on the lives of many. And those she loved would return that love in kind. Her father-in-law, Adolfo, cherished her so much that he would often proclaim “dinner doesn’t start until Victoria is at the table.”
Her capacity for love didn’t end with her family and friends. Victoria’s love of animals was evident to anyone who spent even the smallest amount of time with her. As a young girl she was known for feeding and rescuing strays, a labor of love that she continued throughout her life. And while she loved all of God’s creatures, dogs had top billing in her heart. Her attentiveness and tenderness was evident in the way they gravitated towards her in any room. No matter how many people were around, Victoria could always be found with a dog nearby.
Victoria is survived by her loving husband of 46 years, Hugo; eldest son, John; youngest son, Hugo, daughter-in-law, Vanessa; stepdaughter, Michelle McCall; and her beloved grandson, Kai. Victoria was preceded in death by her parents.
Her legacy of love and unity will forever remind us of the preciousness of every moment and the importance of cherishing our bonds with those who mean the most to us.
