He attended Wynona High School in Wynona, Oklahoma and was drafted out of high school into the US Army during World War II in 1943. He served in General Patton’s army during the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Silver Star for Gallantry in Action.
Upon returning from the Army, he worked for Skelly Oil Company and attended Tulsa University where he met his wife Marguerite R. Thomas, and they were married August 10, 1947 in Malvern, Arkansas.
After 36 years with Skelly-Getty, he retired and moved to Hobbs, NM where he started a very successful small business the “Hobbs Water Mart Inc.” He was a member of Taylor Memorial Baptist Church where he was a leader in the adult department for many years.
Thomas is preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Marguerite Rose Chambers, in 2014.
He is survived by his son Steve and daughter-in-law Brenda Chambers of Gunter, Texas and his daughter Susan and son-in-law Bailey Blakemore of Kingwood, Texas; sister, Maryanne Gilmore and husband Billy Joe Gilmore; five grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. R. B. Chambers, one brother Glen Chambers and sisters, Roberta Lovet, Lillie Dixon, Charlotte Jo Allen and Nina Craig.
Visitation will be from 9:00 am to 11:00 am on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at Kingwood Funeral Home followed by Celebration of Life Funeral Service at 11:00 am. Burial will be at Houston National Cemetery, Houston, Texas at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his memory may be designated to a charity of your choice.
