Mr. Jackson (because you will always be Mr. Jackson to me),
You were the first Texan man I ever met and all Texans were measured by my impression of you and none have ever come close! To a 12 yr old girl you were tall, big, loud, warm, loving and just plain wonderful.  I remember trips to the beach with your family and playing with the CB radio.  I remember your silly hamburger songs. But most of all, I remember how much you loved your wife and your family. I was so lucky to be included in that love.  I feel like you are always in my heart and I know you will watch over us all, just like you did when you were here with us.  I promise to always be there for your family if they need me. You are missed and we will all see you again one day.

He left this life, not our lives.  My brother Joel was 73 years old in March.  He passed away on September 6, 2013.  God must have wanted another angel.  Rarely is there a day that I don't think of him and his influence in my life.  I don't want to sound selfish, but I'm saddened for his family and myself.  He spent time with his grandchildren and family who were his pride and greatest joy.  
Not to worry because whenever I have faced the greatest challenges in my life, Joel's quiet confidence and steel-like strength have been there for me.  I have met a great deal of many famous people, but Joel Wright Jackson is still my personal hero and one of the greatest men I have ever known.  
He was a proud Chairman of the Board of the Texas Rangers Foundation Association.  He never missed a reunion if at all possible.  He attended the last reunion this past June where he had many friends.  They came to see him and he enjoyed each and every one.  He was in a great deal of pain and very weak, but he always had a smile on his face.
Through the years I have tried repeatedly to quantify or define his uniqueness and his specialness.  It is and was more than the fact that he was my brother.  He was a man in full.  There was a depth of character in the man.  I have not found any other, but in my brother Ross.  
This is offered as a sisters loving tribute.  The memory of a great man and a great brother.

I will never forget the great man that was my Pa. He was a great friend, husband, father, and grandfather. I will always cherish the special moments I spent with him in the summertime and our family vacations. He also had a great personality and sense of humor. Even on a bad day he could get you to smile and cheer up. I will never forget the important life lessons I learned from him, and will miss him with all my heart. I love you Pa.

Pa was an outstanding grandpa, dad, husband, and friend!  He was a big role model to me and everyone I know.  He influenced everybody.  Everybody that knew Pa loved him.   I always hear about what an amazing man he was.   When I grow up I want to be just like him, kind and caring.  I had awesome and fun memories with him.  I'm so grateful that I got to spend some of my summer vacations with Pa, Mimi, and Dillon.  I was so blessed I got to do that because I got to bond with him and get closer to him.  We had the best time! The car ride was really fun because Pa would sing or make jokes.  One of my best memories was when he bought cd's of Elvis, Johnny Cash and George Jones.   He thought he did the greatest Elvis impression.   I thought and still do think it was the funniest thing.   I love him to the moon and back! I'm so glad that he's in a better place and out of pain.   I love you Pa!



Joel has always been like a second father to me.  I lost my Dad when I was a sophomore in college and ever since I started dating Jennifer he took me under his wing and treated me like a son.  When Jennifer and I were first married we lived in a little apartment in Houston.  We would come to Joel and Jan's house every weekend and he treated me like a king.  He fed me very well and made sure my beer stein was always full.    Joel and I loved sitting out on his back deck talking about life and enjoying each other's company.  I always looked forward every June going to the Texas Ranger Reunion with the family.
He was a great, kind and loving family man.  He was a great husband to Jan, father to his two daughters and amazing grandfather to his four grandkids.  I loved him very much and he will be truly missed by many.  I love you Joel!

I am so grateful for the last days I got to spend with my Dad.  He fought a long and courageous battle with Cancer.  After he was first diagnosed Steve and I were at mom & dad's house and we were talking about his illness.  He was trying to tell me something, but he couldn't get the words out so he wrote it down on paper.  It said “It's not that I'm afraid to die, my problem is saying good bye to everybody.” 
  He loved his family with every part of his being.  I was so blessed to have such an amazing father and incredible “Pa” to Dillon and Ashley.  If you ever talked to my dad I'm sure you would hear all about his grandchildren.  My Dad was always there for me and my family.  He loved Steve as a son and they always had a special bond.  
My life will be forever changed.  I am so glad that he is finally free from pain and he will suffer no more.  Thank you God for blessing me with a wonderful Dad!  I will miss him every day.  Until we meet again Dad.  I love you with all of my heart!

Joel,
You have always been my "SOUL MATE."  We have been together since I was 16 and you 18.
We have been through a lot together.  We have lost our parents and our Grandson Cameron, but the hardest is losing you.  
I really do not know how I will go on without you but I will.
You have always been the wind beneath my wings.
You are the best husband, father and Pa in he world and I will miss you everyday. 
We will be reunited one day and I look so forward to that.

Pa, 
I am writing you a letter because there are things I have wanted to tell you and this is my way of being able to say everything.  I can not even begin to say how grateful I am to have been raised by someone as caring, wise and humble as yourself.  You always thought of others before yourself.  In the way I live today you are a direct inspiration on how humble and selfless God can make me.  I spent most of my life being raised by you and Grandma and you always have been what the group I am in calls a "WINNER" for me meaning you always told me what I needed to hear, even if I did not want to.  I have come to realize that the way I am living is the way you have always tried to get me to live.  I wish I would have listened to you.  I still have immense guilt over you knowing about some of the problems I have had.  You were the first person to make me realize why  I should have self esteem and I wish I would not have been so caught up in myself because maybe I would not have these problems today.  I am so honored today to say that I get to have a good relationship with my grandparents.  I want to name my son Joel in honor of you.  No matter what will happen inn these next few months I can say some of my most important memories are with you and I will never forget you.

Where do I start.  You were such a great man and I enjoyed all out time together.  You took me in your family with open arms.
I enjoyed our trips to the farm.  We had good times and stories sitting on that porch.
We all enjoyed our family vacations.  You were always the life of the party and made sure everyone was having a good time.
You were always there for us in good times and bad.  You helped us daily with the kids and made our work life so much better.
Joel I will miss you and I love you for being the man you were.

Pa,
I have so many good memories of you.  You and Mimi took good care of me when they worked.  I used to sit in you lap in your chair and get a blanket so we would stay warm.  I loved snuggling with you.
You picked me up at school every day and you knew all the moms better than mom did.  Everyone loved you at school.
We went on so many fun trips with you and Mimi.  You loved the trip to Cancun because we were waited on hand and foot.  You taught us $2 got good service.

A Letter to Dad from Lauren
Dad, you were the greatest man I ever knew.  You were there for me and my family every day of your life.  You helped us through good times and bad.                                   
You and mom made it so much easier for us to have our careers.  You took care of the kids and loved them every day.  They will never forget how much you loved them and did anything you could for them.                                  
Dad, when I was at the worst point in my life when I lost Cameron you were there to comfort me and keep me safe.  I will never forget the strength you gave me to go on.  Hold him in your arms and give him a big hug and kiss from me.  You can now show him how great of Pa you are.                   
Patience was not your virtue nor was worrying about us all.  How I would give anything to have that phone call-Are you alright?  We have not heard from you today.
Do not worry about mom ok.  All of us will make sure she is taken care of.  I know we will never do it as good as you but we will surely try.
Thanks dad for being the best possible role model a girl could have.  I love you and one day our paths will cross again.  Until then.........

Dearest Joel, your Memorial Service was everything you would have wanted it to be.  Remember when you said to the minister "I hope they say good things about me."  Everyone did!  Letters were written to you from Jan, Lauren and Jennifer, their husbands as well as your precious grandchildren telling how much they love you and how you touched each of their lives. Jan, I heard about Joel's passing late last week.  He was a great man who loved his family dearly. I had the privilege of working for Joel at Warren Petroleum for nearly ten years.  He was a stand-up old school guy that loved to talk about his family, the 'big buck', and NGLs.  I know he will be missed by so many.  Bryan and I offer our deepest sympathy during this very sad time.
