James Odis Mooneyham passed away on December 6, 2024, at the ripe age of 91, in the thriving metropolis of Tomball, Texas. At age 84, he was diagnosed with dementia, and while his mind succumbed to progressive cognitive decline over the next seven years, his body kept on keeping on, surviving colon cancer, a major heart attack, two bouts of Covid-19, pneumonia, and various infections. The joke among his kids was that he would outlive them all, but the joke was on them.
James, or Odis as he was known by friends, was a jack-of-all-trades with an entrepreneurial spirit, having owned and operated several businesses during his life. He possessed near-encyclopedic knowledge of cars from the 50s and 60s and had the habit of instantly rattling off the year, make, and model of them anytime he spotted one.
James did his part to propagate the whimsical surname Mooneyham by fathering not one or two, but nine children. When not changing diapers or out making a buck, James was at church, often singing in a gospel trio or quartet, filling the congregation’s hearts with joy and wowing them when he’d hit the high notes.
James was preceded in death by parents Frank and Lois Mooneyham, siblings Frances Pruiett and Jack Mooneyham, and daughter Vicki Stinnette. James is survived by brother Kirk Mooneyham, and children James David Mooneyham, Karol and husband Mike Benfield, Karen and husband Ted Jones, Frank Mooneyham and wife Sally, Lisa and husband Daren Wixson, Kevin Mooneyham, Kathy Brunner, Craig Mooneyham and wife Chanda, and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
A visitation for James will be held Monday, December 9, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Gospel Assembly Church, 548 S Houston Ave, Humble, TX 77338, followed by a funeral service from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
