I have known Jim McGrane for over 60 years, and his wife "Little Phyllis" many years longer. She lived right next door to me.  As I was 5'3" I was known as "Big Phyllis".
Jimmy was a warm and very caring man with a great sense of humor.  Everyone loved Jimmy.  I will keep him in my prayers. 
My heartfelt sympathy to Phyllis, their son,daughter-in-law, grand children and great grand children of whom he was so proud.  Jim was a very special person who will be sorely missed.

Aunt Phyllis and cousin Jimmy, 

I am so sorry for your loss. Everyone will  miss Uncle Jimmy terribly. He was one of the funniest people I have ever known, but more importantly one of the sweetest - even when he was having a political debate with my dad. ;) And there's no doubt that his family meant everything to him.

Phyllis and Jim Jr,

 I know how difficult these times are when we lose someone who meant the world to us.  It's never easy. Kelly and I will hold you close in our prayers during this difficult time.  I'm hopeful the peace that comes from memories of love shared with Jim, comforts all of you this evening and the days ahead.

Dad was a very special person. I will always treasure our time together. The first time we met he told me I had beautiful doe eyes but McGrane's have blue eyes. That is how our private joke that, I was the brown eyed McGrane allowed in the family , started and lasted close to 30 years. Dad will be remembered for his generous spirit , his wit, and love. I know as we grieve he and Joe are playing golf in heaven. ( and Dad is changing his sore to par on his card) Miss you already dad   Valerie

I am truly honored to share that I'm a peer of Jim's son--we all go back so long in our familial type of relationship, that I still refer to "the guys" as "little Jimmy" and "big Jimmy."  Indeed "big Jimmy" was larger than life, a legend. I can still hear his clear distinctive voice projecting warmth, laughter, pride, fairness, humor and compassion amid his trademark storytelling.  He was a good friend, one of the best to my father and mother.  And the caring way he had with his sons, Jimmy and Joey, was something noticeable to my very young self, different from how my Dad dealt with me, more demonstrative, yet both dads shared mutual respect and a strong sense of integrity. Jimmy always made me, an only child, feel welcomed into his family as did his lovely wife, a true angel in my life to this day, Phyllis.  And what an exemplary marriage their union stands for!

The carefree days of Shelter Island adventures, summer barbecues complete with backyard swimming pool, and some discreet setting off of July 4th firecrackers may be long gone, but not the memory of Jim McGrane. May his wife and son, Phyllis and Jim be comforted by their memories as the spirit of a great man now soars.

I met Jimmy and Phyllis in November 1975, from that day forward we where family.  There are so many fond memories that Bill and I shared with Jim, Holidays, Vacations, Parties, One of the fondness was when we went on vacation  Jim and I where always designated to be the Treasurer, while Bill and Phyllis just sat back and enjoyed.  He was the most generous man to all who knew him.  He will be greatly missed.  Jim until we meet again may God hold you in the palm of his hand.  Love and miss you  Bill and Julia Conifrey
