Debby was born to Paul and Marion Aszalos on March 21,1952 in Sharon, Pennsylvania. After graduating from college, Debby began her career in teaching. She taught a variety of grade levels from 1975 to 1994. From there she wore many hats in the education field from being a Skills Specialist of Language Arts and Mathematics, Testing Coordinator, and finally in 2003, becoming an assistant principal until her retirement in June 2018. Debby spent 34 of her 43 years in education working for Aldine Independent School District of Houston Texas. Not long after her retirement, she went back to work for Aldine ISD as a part-time interventionist for struggling learners at Magrill EC/PreK/KG. Debby often spoke of how proud she was of the work she did; she said it was rewarding to be able to work with young learners and help them achieve success. She truly felt teaching was her calling in life! She was beloved by her students and colleagues.
Debby married and had 2 children, Conor and Kathleen. After the dissolution of marriage, Debby rose up and became one of the most dedicated, hard-working, and selfless single parents to ever have walked this earth. Debby always made sure her children had clothes on their back, food in their stomachs, a roof over their head, and unconditional love. She also became somewhat of a mom to many of her children's friends, creating a never-ending "open door" policy to ensure they always had a safe place to go.
In Debby's younger years, she enjoyed cooking big meals for her family. She loved to bake too! One of her traditions was to bake several racks of a variety of different cookies for Christmas. She would then pack them in Christmas-themed containers to hand out to family and friends. Debby was once a skilled clarinet and piano player. She would often be seen sitting at her piano teaching herself how to play a variety of different songs.
The simplest pleasures in life often brought joy to Debby. She loved a quiet evening at home with her dogs, but she also enjoyed watching movies at the theater and attending local markets with her daughter. She enjoyed going out for a nice meal with friends and sometimes would enjoy time at the Bingo Hall. During warmer months, Debby always found herself wanting to take trips to the beach. She loved to sing and some of her favorite artists were ABBA, Queen, The Beatles, Elton John, and Elvis Presley. Debby was a lover of all animals and was always willing to help an animal in need. She full-heartedly believed in the saying "Adopt Don't Shop" and insisted on only homing animals from rescues or shelters. She always did her best to help animals in need whether it was through fostering or donating to help pay for an animal's medical care. She made a monthly donation to the ASPCA and often would assist her daughter with fundraising for her own animal rescue efforts.
Debby had an uncanny ability to find the good in every person she met. She had an incredible sense of humor and one of her mottos in life was, "It's okay to have too much fun!" She had a sense of enthusiasm and curiosity, she had a knack for making people feel important, and a real sense of fun that was contagious. Many of her family and friends will remember her as incredibly intelligent, witty, strong, loving, and devoted.
Previously departed loved ones include Debby's father, Paul Aszalos; brother, David Aszalos; mother, Marion Aszalos; and son, Conor Williams. Debby is survived by her daughter Kathleen Deshotel; son-in-law, Chason Deshotel; niece, Jennifer Aszalos; niece, Kristen Pavkovich; niece, Julianna Beasley; nephew, Paul Aszalos; as well as several great nieces and nephews, cousins, sisters and brothers-in-law.
A celebration of life and reception for Debra will be held Saturday, July 15, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Kingwood Funeral Home, 22800 Highway 59 N, Kingwood, Texas 77339. In lieu of flowers, her daughter believes her mother would have wanted donations to be made to the ASPCA, Humane Society, or any other organization in support of animal rights and protection.
