Monte Powell Moncrief, age 87, a resident of Corpus Christi, Texas and a former longtime resident of Kingsville, Texas, passed away Sunday, December 11, 2011 in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was born on November 8, 1924 in Dallas, Texas, to Emory Moncrief and Bessie Powell Moncrief. Dr. Moncrief was employed for the King Ranch as a veterinarian. Born and raised in Dallas, he attended Sunset High School and played on their State Championship Team of 1942. He played for Texas A&M on the Kiddie Corps Team of 1943. Their team went to the January 1944 Orange Bowl. After graduation, he played a season for the Green Bay Packers under Vince Lombardi and Bear Bryant and then returned to Texas A&M to study veterinarian medicine. He received his vet degree and went to work for King Ranch in Kingsville in 1949. He retired from the ranch in 1977 and went to work for the state of Texas in the State Brucellosis Program until 1986.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Tommie Tate Moncrief; daughter, Diane Bess Ray; and his parents.
Dr. Moncrief is survived by four daughters, Linda Morgan of Port Aransas, Texas, Camille Krech (Harold) of Rockport, Texas, Monte Kay Frederick (Jimmy) of Dale, Texas and Lisa Turcotte (Bud) of Sarita, Texas; two sons, Damon Bryant Moncrief (Denise) and Tom Tate Moncrief (Kelly), both of Hallettsville, Texas; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter on the way.
Rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at the Turcotte-Piper Mortuary Chapel, Kingsville. A Memorial Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at St. Gertrude’s Catholic Church, 1120 South Eighth Street, Kingsville, with Fr. James Stembler as celebrant.
Memorials may be made to Texas A&M University 12th Man Foundation or to a charity of one’s choice.
Services are entrusted to Turcotte-Piper Mortuary, 205 General Cavazos Blvd., Kingsville, Texas.
