Phyllis Roberts Miller, beloved wife, mother, sister, “Nana”, and friend passed away Saturday, May 4, 2024, at the age of 81. She left this world peacefully with her family by her side. Phyllis was born February 25,1943 in Duffield, VA to the late William Fred and Maysie Roberts. She was the first of three daughters preceded in death by her older brother, Bobby Gene and is survived by her dear sisters Joyce Kerns (Larry) and Brenda Philyaw (Bill, late). She was a member of Sunnyside Baptist Church where in her younger years she joyfully and faithfully served in the nursery.
If you knew Phyllis, then you knew that family meant everything to her, especially her husband of almost 61years John (Jay) Miller. She had two daughters Kristi Rhoten (Greg) and Julie Newland (Sean), two grandsons, Jordan Rhoten (special daughter in love Jordan) and Jonathan Newland, honorary grandson Alex Light, and two great grandchildren, Heidi and Nolan Rhoten. All her cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews were precious to her.
Phyllis loved sugary treats, little surprises, flower gardens, shopping on QVC, and children. She often said, “There isn’t a baby on earth I couldn’t love.” She enjoyed going out with her best shopping partner and special sister-in-law, Doris Miller (Ronald, late). It was tradition that “Nana” made the birthday cakes for the family. Phyllis was often described as a “little girl” at heart by her husband Jay. Many of us will remember the sound of her laugh more than anything.
Receiving of friends and family will be at Sunnyside Baptist in Kingsport, TN on May 8, 2024, from 4:00PM-6:00PM, with Dr. Bill Sims officiating the service at 6:00PM. A brief graveside service will be held at East Lawn Cemetery on May 9, 2024, at 11:00AM.
Serving Phyllis as pallbearers are Greg Rhoten, Jordan Rhoten, Sean Newland, Jonathan Newland, Chad McPheron, and Alex Light.
