Max A. Weaver

Max Allen Weaver went to be with Jesus on October 4, 2012, surrounded by his family and friends, after a battle with ALS. He was born on March 26, 1936 in the Teaberry Community of Ashe Co., NC. He was a wonderful husband and father and was a blessing to all those he came in contact with. Max became a child of God when he was 9 years old and faithfully served him throughout his life. Max was ordained in 1991 as Elder with the Church of the Nazarene, and served as pastor for the Church Hill Church of the Nazarene for 13 years and at Kingsport Methodist Church for 6 years. He continued to remain pastor to many after he retired. He was an avid gardener and loved to read. Max graduated from Lansing High School, Lansing, NC (1954); King College, Bristol, TN (BA, 1958) and Doctor of Science (1991); East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, TN (MA, 1963). He was a Chemist, research chemist, developing and research associate, Eastman Kodak Co., Chemical Division, Kingsport, TN from 1958-2008. After retiring, he served as an assistant professor of chemistry at King College (1987-94), and a consultant for Eastman Kodak Co., Rochester, NC., Milliken & Co., Spartanburg, SC., and Eastman Chemical, Kingsport, TN. He contributed articles to numerous science journals and chapters to books. In 1994, Max was recipient of the Patenting Distinction award from Eastman Chemical Co.; Patenting Career Achievement Award, 2007; Research medal from Worshipful Co. Dyers, Society Dyers and Colourist, London, England, 2003. As a member of the American Association of Textile Chemist and Colorist (AATCC), he received the Olney Medal, 2002 and the Henry E. Millson Invention award, 2002; American Chemical Society (ACS), named Speaker of the year, NE Tenn. Section, 1984-85. Max had received 268 patents during his career. Max was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Pearl Weaver, and sister, Josephine Weaver. He is survived by his wife, Jerry (Helen Moore) Weaver, daughter Vickie Barnes and son-in-law Carl of Maryville, TN and son Tod Weaver, and daughter-in-law Dottie of Kingsport; grandson, Phillip Dotson and wife Emily and great-granddaughter, Megan Layne of Kingsport. He has also left behind a host of family and friends. Max said to tell everyone, “I’ve gone back to Teaberry, but my soul has gone to be with the LORD.” Memorials may be made to King College, Bristol, TN, to the Weaver Endowment for Organic Chemistry. The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 7, 2012 from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm in the chapel of East Lawn Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 4:00 pm with Dr. Jim Manis and Rev. LeRoy Davis, officiating. Interment will be held on Monday, October 8, 2012 at 11:00 am in the Weaver Family Cemetery, Warrensville, NC. Pallbearers will be David Eller, Jerry Eller, Kent Poe, Paul Poe, Randy Eller, Mark Weaver, Wayne Eldreth, Ken Weaver, David Bumgardner and Sam Shumate. Everyone is asked to assemble at the cemetery by 10:45 am for the service.
