Eugene “Gene” Fields, age 71, of Kingsport, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 7th, 2014, at Holston Valley Medical Center, after a brief illness. Mr. Fields was born on December 30, 1942 in Dante, Virginia, the son of the late Rev. Ralph and June Fields. He resided in Kingsport, TN where he was employed by Kingsport Power Company in the engineering department for 33 years. He was a member of Rings Chapel Baptist Church in Castlewood, VA where he taught youth Sunday school classes, and in later years became a member of Colonial Heights Baptist Church. Gene was an avid NASCAR and Dobyns-Bennett football fan. He especially enjoyed spending time with family and vacationing at the beach, but his newest thrill in life was becoming a proud granddaddy of twins, which he enjoyed spending every moment he could with them. Mr. Fields was preceded in death by his mother and father Rev. Ralph and June Fields, and one brother Ralph Carl Fields Jr. Survivors include his loving wife, Kay S. Fields of 48 years; son, Stephen Eugene Fields and wife Abigail, and his pride and joy his twin grandchildren, Jackson Eugene and Sierra Elizabeth of Blountville, TN. One sister Ethel F. Schenk and husband Bobby of Glen Allen, VA; two brothers Stanford L. Fields and wife Joyce of N. Myrtle Beach, SC; Gaines “Buddy” Fields of Kingsport, TN. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Elma Ruth Sluss, who he considered his second mother of Nickelsville, VA; brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws, Roger and Dorothy Sluss of Stephens City, VA, Ronald Sluss of Castlewood, VA, and Kathy and Mike Tiller of Bristol, TN, also several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 9 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at East Lawn Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will follow at 7:00 pm with Rev. Greg Burton officiating. Entombment service will be held Friday, January 10, at East Lawn Memorial Park at 11:00 am. Pallbearers will be: Elgin Gonce, Daniel Armstrong, Andrew Bell, Christopher Mynhier, Garland Osborne, and Howard Hudson.
