After a brief illness, Carl Edward Hill went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 25, 2015, with his precious wife and three daughters by his side, at Bristol Wellmont Hospice House. Carl was born on April 25, 1929 in Tom’s Creek, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Henry Hill and Mary Ruth Hill Gilliam; his brother, Hubert Clyde Hill; infant son, David Wayne Hill; and awesome son-in-law, Marc Lewis Schlicher.
After 20 years of active duty in the U.S. Navy, Carl retired in 1969 as a Chief Petty Officer, YNC. After moving back to the area, he worked for Rental Uniform for nearly 15 years.
Carl was a kind and loving husband, father and man of God. He had a servant’s heart, and loved doing building projects for his three daughters - from room additions to decks and roofing. He helped build the Family Life Center for his church (Kingsport Community Church) as well as houses for families with Habitat for Humanity. He was a volunteer at Wellmont. In his spare time, Carl enjoyed golfing and gardening, and was notably good at both.
He will be greatly missed and remembered by his devoted wife of 67 years, Reta Jo Hughes Hill, who was the love of his life, and his three loving daughters: Donna Hill Schlicher, Springfield, OH; Sandy Hill Ferguson (Joey), Pawleys Island, SC; and Debby Hill Wood (Bill), Johns Creek, GA. Carl was especially proud of his 8 grandchildren: Sarah Jo Schlicher Hershberger (Sam), Wooster, OH; Jesse Schlicher (Ivy), Fort Mill, SC; Jared Schlicher (Ariel), Springfield, OH; Matthew Ferguson (Marie), Greer, SC; Niles Ferguson ( Maria), Fort Mill, SC; William Wood, III, Johns Creek, GA; Joseph Wood (Jenn), Cumming, GA; and Mary Jo Wood Howell(Ben), Norcross, GA. Carl was additionally blessed with 16 great-grandchildren: Ethan and Logan Hershberger; Edie Schlicher; Nolan and Kailyn Schlicher; Lucas, Sydney, Carly, Ada, and Levi Ferguson; Turner, Calvin, and Ruthie Ferguson; and Eli, Brooks, and 3rd-baby-boy Howell. Surviving extended family include his brother, Joe Hill (Joann, deceased); Henrietta Roach (Robert, deceased); Carolyn Cunningham (Bill); sister-in-law Erma Lee Hill (Clyde, deceased); and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family would like to thank the amazing staff and volunteers at the Bristol Wellmont Hospice House for their tender care and ministry.
Visitation will be at Kingsport Community Church on Thursday, August 27, 2015 from 5 - 7pm, followed by the funeral service at 7pm, officiated by Pastor Ron Lowe. A graveside service will be held at East Lawn Memorial Park in the Garden of Prayer on Friday, August 28, 2015 at 10:00am. Military Honors will be rendered by American Legion Post 3-265. Pallbearers will be Carl’s 8 grandsons and grandsons-in-law. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Kingsport Community Church, 2316 Memorial Blvd., Kingsport, TN 37664. East Lawn Funeral Home has the honor of serving the Hill family.
