one year of declining health. A celebration of life was held Thursday at SECU Hospice House in
Smithfield,N.C. where his wife is a resident. He was born May 24,1923 in Fletcher,N.C. to the late
William and Della Hughes. As a young man he served in Europe and North Africa during WWll.
He then returned to North Carolina to wed his teenage bride,Janie Moore. Ben worked on the
railroad with his father until moving to Kingsport,Tn.in 1952. He worked at Mead Corporation from
that time until he retired in 1986. In 2004 he moved to Raleigh,N.C. with daughter and husband.
The family will receive friends from 12to 1pm Saturday April 14 at East Lawn Funeral Home,Kingsport,Tn.
Funeral Services will be held at lpm in the chapel. Military graveside services will follow at Tri-City Memorial Gardens,Kingsport. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by sisters Rhoda Gillespi,Betty Maynor
and Glenn Hughes. Surviving are wife Janie Moore Hughes,daughter Glenda Boyer and husband Tom of Raleigh,
son Steve Hughes and wife Karen of Knoxville, Tn. and son Randy Hughes and wife Sheila of Dayton, Ohio,
one sister Ruth Shuler,brothers Bill Hughes and wife Nana,J.B.Hughes and wife Nella Mae,Dewey Hughes and wife Thelma,and Jimmy Hughes. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Special
friends David Bell and Herman Williams. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
