Anne Elizabeth Swink Hertel, age 87, passed away on October 2, 2024, in Kingsport, TN. Born on April 28, 1937, Anne dedicated much of her life to serving others, She worked at ITT North Electric for twenty-five years in the payroll department, and later as a compassionate nurse and later sharing her warmth in various retail positions.
Anne's love for her faith was evident as she was an active member of Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church, engaging in the Care Shephard's Ministry and being one of the first women elders of the church. Her husband, Miles Swink, served as an Elder, and together they were lifetime members of the church.
Outside of her spiritual life, Anne cherished the outdoors. She was an avid camper, a diligent gardener who loved tending to her flowers, and a beach enthusiast. Anne’s zest for life extended to square dancing, where she found joy and community. Anne also served in the Epsilon Sigma Alpha International Pi of Kingsport, a philanthropic fundraising organization serving St. Jude’s.
Anne is survived by her daughters, Brenda LeAnne Newsom (Gail), Nadine Flashel, and Delene Whetsel; grandchildren, Matt Whetsel (Jodie), Samantha Wolfe, and Aaron Whetsel (Brianna); and great-grandchildren, Bradley Hopkins, Sophia Whetsel, Katy, and Millie Whetsel. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Miles Swink, second husband, Bob Hertel, and sister, Martha Hartman.
A visitation will be held on Friday, October 4, 2024, at 4:30 PM, with a service following at 5:30 PM at Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Anne’s name to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, honoring her lifelong commitment to caring for others.
