She was born on August 3, 1919 in Summit City, the daughter of Clinton and Clara (Logie) Winch. Leona married Robert J. Mathews Sr. on June 25, 1966, he preceded her in death in 1985. She was a lifelong resident of the Kingsley area. Leona was employed at the Traverse City Regional Psychiatric Hospital for 33 years, retiring as Nursing Supervisor. Leona really enjoyed her work, doing for others who were less fortunate. She was always ready to help anyone who needed her help or transportation. Leona was a member of St. Mary of Hannah Catholic Church, American legion Post 219 in Fife Lake, and The Blackman Flower Club. She enjoyed dancing, playing cards, bowling, knitting, and taking care of the flowers in her yard. Leona truly loved her family and grandchildren, and was noted for her cooking and baking.
She is survived by her daughter Rita (James) Spaulding and her grandson Clinton (Lori Metcalf) Rodes, four granddaughters; Ronda Goodman, Lisa Quick, Jamie Goodman, and Bernetta Rodes, (10) great-grandchildren, and (11) great-great-grandchildren. Leona was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert Mathews, her son Roy Rodes, her step-son Richard Mathews Sr., and a step-grandson Richard Mathews Jr.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday July 26, 2011 at 11am from Covell Funeral Home, Kingsley, with the Rev. Arthur Covell officiating. Visitation will be on Monday July 25, 2011 from 4 to 8pm at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers memorials may be given in Leona’s name to the Cherryland Humane Society.
