Walter J. McConaghy

Services for Walter J. (Mac) McConaghy, 74, of Harker Heights will be 11:00am Monday September 29, 2014 at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen. Inurnment will be 12:00pm at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery with full military honors.

Mr. McConagahy died September 23, 2014 after a short battle with cancer. He was born April 21, 1940, to the late Joseph and Evelyn McConaghy in New York City. He was preceded in death by his brother Joseph McConaghy and sister Evelyn “Doodsie” Sheets.

He served in the U. S. Marine Corps from 1957 to 1967 and the U. S. Army from 1967-1977. He moved to Harker Heights in 1969. He retired with the National Defense Medal and the Good Conduct Medal Clasp with three bronze loops.

In1985 he met and married the love of his life Melanie Mittanck and they were married for 29 years.

Mac was a 44 year member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3892 in Harker Heights and a life member of the post for 32 years. He was an active member holding several positions throughout the years.

He is survived by his wife, Melanie of Harker Heights, sister Patricia Ryan of Miami, Florida as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great- great nieces and nephews

In lieu of flowers donations my be made to the Central Texas Veterans Research Foundation 1901 S 1st Street (Rom 151) Temple Texas for bile duct cancer. That was Mac’s diagnosis.
