Walter A. Johnson, Jr. has gone home to be with the Lord at the age of 76 on August 17, 2016 in Bertram, TX. He was born at home in Hamilton County on December 12, 1939. The Lord has gained another True Cowboy. He was not just a wonderful Cowboy but a wonderful man, father, husband, grandfather and friend. Please keep the Johnson family in your prayers during this time He will be greatly missed. Fly high cowboy!!!
Walter was a bigger than life character with a Cowboy’s rough exterior, but the gentle soul of man who loved with every ounce of his being. He was slow to anger, but quick to laugh. He loved Lucy to pieces and enjoyed sitting at the dining room table razzing her while she puttered in the kitchen. It often got him scolded to which he would usually let out a belly laugh like a mischievous little boy. He was a wonderful and close father to his children a playful papa to his grandchildren, and a loving brother to his siblings.
He was a hard worker – he spent many years running a brick laying company in the Texas heat with his son, Cohnway. It was hard work, but you would never hear him complain. He was generous in every way. If you needed someone to talk to, he would be there to listen. If you needed help, he was there to lend a hand. If you needed a dollar, and he had it, he would lend it to you. Until the day he could no longer ride a horse, he had been a cattleman. Saturday mornings were spent in the pasture working cows… with a rope in his hand, a good horse beneath him, and a cow dog (or two). He had also been an avid team roper for which he was inducted into the Bell County Cowboy’s and Cowgirl’s Ring of Honor in 2006. He was a very good man and will be missed by many.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife of 36 years, Judith “Judy” Barrington Johnson; parents; two sisters and one brother.
He is survived by his wife Linda “Lucy” Johnson of Florence; son, Cohnway Johnson and wife Glenda of Killeen; daughter, Mollie Johnson of Killeen; step daughter, Jimmie West of Austin; grandchildren: Cassie Orr, Darby Johnson, Sydney Johnson, Clay Johnson and Paris Johnson; brother, Clifford Johnson of Austin; sister, Georgia McBeth of Copperas Cove; and many friends.
