Tom was born January 16, 1926 in Big Flat, Arkansas to Thomas Richard Vickrey and Lily (Dixon) Vickrey, the 13th of 21 children. He is survived by his daughter Lynn Milam of Temple, one brother Tommie Gene Thompson of Blanchard, Oklahoma, one granddaughter, Amanda Jean of Lubbock, hundreds of nieces and nephews and his best bud William G. Stanton of Temple.
Tom married his "sweetie" E. Jean (Franklin) Milam, a Navy Veteran, March 13th, 1957 in Phenix City, Alabama. The two were united in Alabama due to the lengthy waiting period to obtain a marriage certificate in her home state of Louisiana. After their union Tom was immediately shipped overseas and Jean returned to Louisiana to wait for her soldier! She preceded him in death September 11, 1976.
A proud military man, Tom served his country for 22 years in the United States Army. An infantryman, 17 of those years were served overseas. It took injury from a helicopter crash in Vietnam to end his military career. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. Tom was a lifetime member of the Rod and Gun Club, BassMasters, American Legion Post 223, DAV Chapter 29, and VFW 9192.
Tom was an avid fisherman, hunter, and all-around outdoorsman, but most comfortable on or around the water.
The family will receive friends for visitation Tuesday evening November 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Crawford Bowers Funeral Home, Killeen.The funeral will be Wednesday November 16, 10 a.m. at Memorial Baptist Church, Killeen, Pastor Justin Moss officiating. Graveside services to follow at Killeen City Cemetery.
