”A life celebrated”, Austin Boone Whitehead was born on July 15, 1920 in Minneapolis, MN to his namesake Austin Boone Whitehead & Helga (Hansen) Whitehead. He attended high school in Lawton, OK.
A decorated soldier, he enlisted on July 23, 1938 at Ft. Sill OK, serving his country during World War II and the Korean Conflict; receiving the Medal of Honor along with several others. Austin served in the United States Army and Air Force, he also participated as part of the Funeral Detail for 1 year; retiring after 20 years of service as a Tech Sergeant on November 30, 1958 at Sioux City Air Base in Iowa.
He was a life member of the American Legion Post 223 as well as being a life member of the VFW 9192. Austin volunteered at the VA Hospital, loved his woodworking and leather making, several organizations benefitted from his love of helping others and giving back.
Austin is preceded in death by his Parents; Austin & Helga, Brother; Jerome Whitehead, Sisters; Josephine Levesque and Helga Whitehead.
Austin leaves loving memories to be cherished to the love of his life, Barbara Nuttall, his caregivers; Sarah Kliendest, Angie Bradberry, Steven Montavon, Alberta Rodriguez and Missy Cornielo.
Services will be held at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home of Killeen on Friday, February 5, 2016 with visitation from 12pm-1pm, funeral service will be at 1:00pm with burial to follow at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery with Full Military Honors at 3:00pm.
