Russell spent this youth in Hennessey, Oklahoma. In 1978, Russell and his family moved to Midland, Texas where he spent his formative years. Russell attended Midland College and the University of Texas at Austin. At the age of 21, Russell decided to join the US Army as an infantry man.
Early on in his military career, Russell determined that he might be eligible for attendance at the Officer Candidate School (OCS). After submitting his OCS packet, he was selected for attendance at OCS and graduated as a Second Lieutenant in January of 1988. His first duty station as an officer was the L" Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kansas. It was at Fort Riley that Russell would meet his future wife, Shelia Ann Lenhart. He served in Operation Desert Shield/Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operational Iraqi Freedom 06-08, all the while Shelia was at his side. In May Of 1996 he was blessed with the birth of his daughter Shelia Rose. In 1999 he was blessed again with the arrival of Tiffany Lynne. After almost 23 years of service, Russell retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2008. Throughout his years, Russell tried to impart proverbs to his children that were handed down to him from his father. Perhaps his favorite that he shared with his daughters was referred to as
"The 12 little words", "If it is to be, it is up to me and God."
