He was born in Pitcairn, NY March 9, 1937 to Philip and Cherry (Hall) McCarthy.
He served in the Army 21 years. He retired as an SFC/E-7 in 1975. He was a Vietnam War Veteran. He also served 13 years with the DOD as a Quality Assurance Specialist, Ammunition Surveillance (QASAS) retiring in 1993.
He graduated from East State University now Texas A& M in Texarkana, TX in 1983.
He married his loving wife Marilyn Whitworth November 27, 1985 in Anniston, AL. He and his wife moved to Killeen, TX in 2006.
In 2010 he and his wife became volunteers with the Texas Master Naturalist Program, Central TX Chapter. He developed an interest in Water Quality issues. He performed water Quality tests as a citizen scientist doing Stream Team testing. He also developed a passion for studying fresh water macro invertebrates and made several presentations about them to schools, other TX Master Naturalist chapters and even at the TX Master Naturalist State Program.
He enjoyed nature, travelling and cruising. He enjoyed making homemade jam. He was a lifelong member of the VFW in NY. He loved his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends.
Survivors include his 3 sons Richard McCarthy of Animas, NM, Michael McCarthy and wife Rose(Schneider) of Mascotte, FL and Robert McCarthy and wife Tina (Bliss) of New Port Richey; FL, 5 grandchildren Kenneth and Keriann of NY, Tammy, Trisha and Tiffani of FL; 5 great grandchildren Brooke, Bailey and Logan of NY and Kalynn and Trinity of FL: 3 nieces Eleanore Schultz (Clay)of Round Rock, TX , Melanie of FL and Cassie of NY; 2 sisters Marie McCarthy (Linda) of Syracuse, NY and Marilyn Stevens (Jay) of Johnson City, TN, 1 brother-in-law Edward Whitworth of Copperas Cove, TX.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents and 1 brother Phil McCarthy.
