Hers was a life well lived, all 91+ years of it! That life began in northeast Killeen, on the farm where her dad, Dave Hicks, raised cotton (a little). Her mom, Lillian Belle Hicks, died when Neva was only 11 years old; so she finished the raising of four younger brothers and sisters AND graduated from Killeen High School in 11 years (There was no twelfth year back then.). Her husband, Bill (Clyde Smith Wolf), was raised in Wolf Hollow, out the east range road; he contributed to his nation twice, with his home place being deeded over to Camp Hood and as a World War II vet. Together they raised three children:
Barbara Jean Higgins (Spokane, Washington)
Lillian Ann Farris (Killeen, Texas)
Curtis Stanley Wolf (Killeen, Texas)
Neva's roles in her well-lived life were as variegated as the embroidery thread that she used:
Daughter, sister, cousin, aunt
Wife, mother, grandmother, great and great-again grandmother
Seamstress, quilter, painter, crafter (New projects were elixirs for her.)
Nurse, warrior, teacher, problem-solver
Business woman, homemaker, chemist
Friend
Neva was incredibly optimistic, building a new house when she was 86 (Larry Weiss thinks HE built it) and buying a new car when she was 88.
She was just like Peter and different, a very purposeful, incredibly stubborn rock of ages.
Neva led confidently, from both the front and the rear. Providing an example from the front and kicking us from the back, as needed.
She loved the Texas Rangers, her Sunday School Class, and us.
Neva was, is, and will be a moving force in our lives.
Services for Neva will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at the First Baptist Church in Killeen, Texas with Jack Husung officiating. Burial will follow at Killeen City Cemetery. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday evening from 5:30 to 7:30 at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen.
The family has requested that those wishing to may donate to a cause that was near and dear to Neva's heart, the Food Care Center at PO Box 1656, Killeen, Texas 76540-1656.
