Memorial services for Mary Harris, 84, will be at noon Saturday at Pershing Park Baptist Church. Pastor Joda Weston will officiate. Ms. Harris died March 1, 2011, at the Temple Living Center West in Temple.
She was born and raised in Minden and was a graduate of Minden High School. She was the youngest daughter of Walter Tip Hays and Hattie Tucker Hays.
Ms. Harris loved the Piney Woods of East Texas and her last wishes included spreading her ashes near her childhood home. She accepted Jesus Christ as her savior in her youth and was ready to meet the Lord. Ms. Harris loved bowling, sewing, country and western dancing, and watching golf and the Dallas Cowboys. She worked as a cashier for many years at the Main PX at Fort Hood and also worked as a nursery worker for several years at Pershing Park Baptist Church. She had lived in Killeen since 1964 and was a founding charter member of Pershing Park Baptist Church.
Ms. Harris was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Oma Phillips, Loma Spiller and Odette Crow; a brother, Walter "Sonny" Hays; and a daughter, Sandra Brumfield.
Survivors include a brother, Nealie Wayne and his wife, Willene Hays, of Minden; daughters, Wanda and her husband, Jasper Honeycutt, of Holly Grove, Ark., and Debbie and her husband, Randy Thompson, of Schertz; and two sons, Ron and his wife, Noemi Harris, of Killeen and Mark Harris of Harker Heights. She is also survived by six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Pershing Park building fund. The family would like to say thank you for all the expressions of love and concern shown to them during this time.
