Growing up in a military family, Kevin spent his childhood years in Alaska, California, and Germany prior to settling in Killeen, Texas, where he attended Nolan Junior High and Killeen High School. He was an active member of the Boy Scouts of America, and achieved the highest honor of Eagle Scout.
Kevin was baptized at Pershing Park Baptist Church on January 26, 1969. He reactivated his membership on April 15, 1991. As an active and faithful member since 2009, his relationship with the Lord was very important to him.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1971 and served honorably until 1974. After his departure from the Army, he returned to Killeen where he became Killeen’s first African American fire fighter. In 1981, Kevin enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in Kingsville, Texas, Florida and Japan. During his time in the Navy, he worked as an aircraft mechanic and earned the National Defense Medal. In 1985, after working various jobs across the United States, Kevin accepted a position as a heavy equipment operator for the Walmart Distribution Center in Temple, Texas, where he worked until 2008.
Kevin loved spending time with his family, hunting and going to the movies. He was also an avid fisherman. He once said, “By the big water is where I feel the most alive.”
Kevin was called home to glory on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 after a courageous battle with liver cancer. Kevin leaves to cherish his memory: his daughters, Bianca Dorice Smith and Jacqueline Elise Tony; 4 grandsons, Dylan, Shayne, Kevyn and Lyam; 1 granddaughter, Jade; parents Marshall and Henevelyn Smith; 2 brothers, Marvin Smith and Marshall (Kristin) Smith; 4 sisters, Michele (Roy) Andy, Robin Smith, Karen (Raul) Byrd and Dana Smith; and a host of nephews, nieces, uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.
