John was born November 10, 1938, in West Union, Ohio, to Walter Woodrow and Emma Louise Foster née Parker. He was the oldest of three boys.
After a two-year stint in the Army, that brought him from Ohio to Texas, he went to work for the United States Post Office in Killeen where he enjoyed an approximately 40-year career.
He developed his love of cooking and baking from his mother and would be the first to bring a sweet treat for people to enjoy at work or a family gathering. Always active in raising and showing animals he volunteered for many years as a 4-H leader in and around the Killeen area. Even after stepping away from that rewarding role, he continued to raise and show rabbits while helping other youngsters with their projects.
John never met a stranger. Always one with a smile and a story he took his vast knowledge of mailrooms and turned to volunteer work at Metroplex Hospital in Killeen for close to 13 years. He spent his days visiting with and helping others while making sure the hospital mail was delivered.
John was preceded in death by his wife Virgie, parents, and youngest brother Charles Marion Foster. He is survived by his brother James Robert (Bob) Foster and his wife Judy of Johnstown, Ohio; daughter Christine Foster Dittman and granddaughters Catherine Elaine Dittman and Caroline Nicole Dittman of Round Rock, Texas; stepson David Massey and his daughter Emma Rose and son Landon of Houston, Texas; and numerous cousins.
The family requests those who wish to express sympathy consider making a donation to The American Diabetes Association or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
