Funeral services will be held for U.S. Army Sergeant Major-Retired, Jimmie Dean Ingram, 78, at 1 PM Saturday, at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen. Interment will be immediately after, at Killeen City Cemetery with full military honors. He died Monday, May 7th, 2012.Mr. Ingram was born September 20th, 1933, in Holland, Texas, to Leonard C. and Annie Bell Ingram. He spent his early years in Holland and nearby Bartlett, graduating from Bartlett High School in 1951. After working various jobs, Mr. Ingram enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1953. He served as cook, night baker, and Executive Chef, and in later enlistments, as an intelligence analyst and linguist. As a Non-Commissioned Officer, he served in various leadership positions including First Sergeant in the 2nd Armored Division at Fort Hood, and two tours as III Corps G-2 Sergeant Major also at Fort Hood, and a tour as Sergeant Major in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence, Headquarters, U.S. Army Europe. His many tours of duty took him to Italy, Germany, Turkey, two combat tours to The Republic of Viet Nam, Thailand, and various locations in the U.S. Sergeant Major Ingram retired after thirty years of distinguished service at Fort Hood, Texas in his final tour as G-2 Sergeant Major, in 1983. Mr. Ingram completed his Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice at American Technological University in 1984. After military retirement, Mr. Ingram was a contract Senior Intelligence Analyst, Fort Hood Customs Inspector, and Security Officer for III Corps and TEXCOM, before taking disability retirement.
Mr. Ingram loved automobile repair, fishing, and golf in his younger years, Dallas Cowboys football, and traveling and enjoying his family and grandchildren. He was a charter life member of the Retired Sergeants Major Association, life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Disabled American Veteran’s Association, and a member of the American Legion.
Mr. Ingram met and married his wife of over 55 years, Waltraud, on his first German tour at Baumholder, Germany. Together they traveled as an Army family, and had a son, Bernd, and daughter, Marita. Mr. Ingram was preceded in death by his parents, older brother Lenis C. Ingram of Georgia, and nephew Bobby Lawton, of Temple, Texas. Survivors include his wife Waltraud; Bernd and Kathy Ingram and grandchildren Lauren and Collin, of Kansas, and Marita Zellmar, and grandchildren April Zellmar-Nesslein and Jennifer of Killeen; sister Emmy Lawton and sons Thomas, Allan, and Randy Lawton, and sister Theresa Sutton and daughters Christie and Michelle; and brother Lenis’ daughter Peggy; and many lifelong friends and other family.Visitation is 6-8 P.M. at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen.
