Lieutenant Colonel Jerrick J. Hunter, lovingly known as “JJ”, a dedicated and decorated Army officer, passed away on Thursday, May 16, 2024. Born on August 31, 1980, in Taylor, Texas, Jerrick leaves behind a legacy of service, leadership, and commitment to his country.
After graduating high school, Jerrick enlisted in the United States Army as an Infantryman with the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, KY. He was later commissioned into the Army Chemical Corps through the ROTC program at The University of Texas at Austin. Following his commissioning, Jerrick completed the Chemical Basic Officers Leadership Course at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, and served as a Platoon Leader for the 31st Chemical Company and Executive Officer for the 46th Chemical Company at Fort Hood, TX.
Jerrick deployed overseas in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Upon returning, he attended the Chemical Captain’s Career Course at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, and served as Senior Observer/Trainer-Coach at Fort Shafter, HI, and Commander of Alpha Company, 45th Special Troops Battalion, 45th Sustainment Brigade, Schofield Barracks, HI. Transitioning to the Army Acquisition Corps, he became the 724th Contracting Team Leader at Fort Carson, CO, and the Service’s Division Contracting Chief at Forward Operating Base Shank, RC-East in Afghanistan. Notable assignments included Battalion S3 for the 918th Contracting Battalion at Fort Carson, CO; Chief of Contracting at Regional Contracting Office-Pyeongtaek, Korea; Branch Chief, Operational Contract Support Division, Joint Staff’s Logistics Directorate (J4) at the Pentagon; Program Integrator for Defense Contract Management Agency in Phoenix, AZ; and most recently, contracting integrator for the Army Futures Command in Austin, TX.
LTC Hunter's awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Joint Staff Badge, and the Expert Infantryman’s Badge.
Jerrick’s love for his country was surpassed only by his love for his family—his wife, daughters, parents, and siblings. He cherished time spent with family and friends, enjoying activities such as traveling, hiking, fishing, and attending sporting events. He especially loved watching his daughters play sports.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Ann Gee Hunter; cherished daughters, Kay-Lee Ann and Keilani Hunter; devoted parents, Waesun and Johnny Hunter; brothers, Timothy Bass and Justin Hunter (Stacey); and sister, Tiffany Zavala (Herbie).
A Visitation for LTC Hunter will be held Wednesday, May 29, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Crawford Bowers Funeral Home, 1615 S. Fort Hood Street, Killeen, TX.
A Visitation will also be held on Thursday, May 30, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. A Funeral Services will be Thursday, May 30, 2024 at 11:00 AM, in the chapel of Crawford Bowers Funeral Home. Graveside services, with Full Military Honors, will follow at 1:00 PM at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery, 11463 State Highway 195, Killeen, TX.
