David Alan Dowell, age 73, of Munfordville, KY, formerly of Killeen, TX, passed away Friday, September 1, 2023 at Greenview Hospital in Bowling Green. David served as an Infantryman and Parachutist during the Vietnam era. His last duty assignment was Co A, 75th Ranger, 1st Cavalry Division, Ft Hood, Texas. David loved horses. Prior to joining the Army he was a jockey for Clyde Douglas "Bulldog" Turner, racing Quarter Horses all over Texas. David enjoyed traveling the country while remodeling Marriott hotels. After years on the road he continued operating Dowell Construction in Killeen, TX. David and Sue Jane moved to Kentucky in 2015. While in Kentucky, David was a driver for local Amish, gaining the nick-name "Tex Byler" while driving for Marlin Byler. Most importantly, David never met a stranger and was always the life of the party. He was more than witty and could come off the cuff with some of the funniest things. David loved music trivia and watched Jeopardy daily. Due to his love of cowboy culture and fondness of horses he rode in the Great American Adventures, Wyatt Earp's Vendetta Ride, in Tombstone, AZ where he was affectionately known as "Lonesome Dave".
He was the son of the late Russell William Dowell and the late Georgia Mae Barron Dowell.
He is preceded in death by his siblings Dwight Dowell, Dudley Dowell, Joe Dowell and Donna Graves.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Sue Jane Crabb Dowell, Munfordville, KY; four sons, J. P. Dowell and his wife Stacy, Killeen, TX, Tony Dowell and his wife Corrie, Dallas, TX, Dustin Dowell, Killeen, TX, Chad Connell and his wife Haley, Bend, OR; one daughter, April Gustafson and her husband Wiley, Conroe, TX; three grandchildren, Autumn Dowell, Harlee Gustafson, and baby girl Connell on the way; one sister, Patricia (Pat) Powell, Killeen, TX; two brothers, Jack Dowell and his wife Mary, Calistoga, CA, and Dale Dowell and his wife Linda, Pasadena, TX; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins that are too numerous to name, but he was loved by all.
