Anna was born in Glenpool, Oklahoma when it was a tiny farm community. After graduation from High School she worked as a secretary. When recruiters for the military came to town, she talked it over with her Dad and joined the Women’s Army Corps. She was stationed in New Jersey, then Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas, where she met and fell in love with Lieutenant Ed Jones. They married in 1952. She then moved to San Antonio while he shipped out to Korea. Upon return, Ed joined the FBI and they took off to Flagstaff, AZ. The couple moved all around the USA with his job – raising two children. They lived in California, Virginia, Florida, Puerto Rico - returned to San Antonio, and finally came full circle back to Killeen in 1968.
She and Ed built a champion line of Appaloosa show and cutting horses from Navajo Pepper – a foundation mare belonging to her father, Floyd King. Ann was always an active, outgoing person who made friends quickly, easily, and everywhere. She joyfully volunteered in every community she lived in and worked with altar guild in each church. She became a lifelong member of St. Christopher’s Episcopal in Killeen. She worked with and encouraged Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Killeen Riding & Roping Club, and the Appaloosa Horse Club. After the death of her son she became very active with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).
In recent years, she started a new life near her daughter in Ovilla, TX. She made many wonderful friends there too, including neighbors, horse people, her caregivers, Reverend Adrianna Elliott of St. Anne’s Episcopal in Desoto, TX, and the staff of Legend Oaks of Waxahachie.
Always an extrovert, Ann loved her family, people, animals, sports (especially basketball), dancing, cooking, gardening, and had a special interest in conserving native plants. She had a smile, a quip, a joke, or advice for everyone. She is sure to be whole and happy again in the light and love of her Faith and loved ones who’ve gone on before her, including her horses, I’m A Pepper Too “Toot”, her champion mare and one of her closest friends.
Anna is survived by her sister, Vicki Hulett of Edmond, OK; her daughter Elizabeth Jones and son-in-law Bert Holombek of Ovilla, TX; her grandchildren Emily and Stephen Holombek; Brooke and Keith Hughes; and her great grandchildren Hailee, Taylor, and Ian Hughes. She now rejoins her beloved husband of 44 years, Edwin Brooke Jones, who passed in 1996, and her son, Davis Brooke Jones who left too soon in 1999.
Ann’s funeral service will be held Friday, March 16 at 10:30 am at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, Killeen, TX. Reception to follow in Parish Hall of the Church. Burial to be April 3, 2:00 pm at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
