April 17th, 1961 - February 28th, 2024
Kevin Douglas Ward, beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and brother, passed away peacefully at his home on February 28th, 2024, with his wife, Kelly, by his side. He fought a courageous battle with cancer.
Kevin leaves behind a legacy of love and strength. He is survived by his devoted wife, Kelly Gross, his children Allison Longe (Justin) and Simon Ward (Vanna), stepdaughters Destiny Gross (Patrick) and Darris Gross (Rob), and his cherished grandchildren Nolan, Jaxon, Ivan, Emerson, and Holden. Kevin was the second youngest of five children and is survived by his sister, Terry Beaton, and brothers Laurie, John, and Kelly, as well as sister-in-law Jackie Collins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth "Betty" (nee Blair) and William "Willy" Ward, and his grandchild Peyton.
Kevin was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and spent his childhood on the family farm in Rosser, Manitoba. From a young age, he was known for his calm and quiet demeanor among his siblings. He later pursued a career in carpentry, earning top grades in trades school. His career brought him out to Kenora to work with his brother, Laurie, where he would eventually put down roots. He supported himself and his family by working with wood his whole career, being an excellent carpenter and cabinet maker. He built and designed his family homes on Kramer Lake, always adding his unique touches. His career also brought him out to Labrador, twice, by longtime friend Randy Small, to accompany him for a remote construction job because "he grew up a farm kid from Manitoba and could figure out how to fix anything".
In addition to his career, Kevin was a gifted musician, playing acoustic guitar and singing. He was able to play any song by ear. He shared his passion for music by performing in bands with his brother Laurie, friend Greg, and others, entertaining audiences around Kenora. A fond memory of Dad was him playing Fred Penner songs while his daughter, Allison sang along. He also passed on his love for music, and playing guitar to his son, Simon.
In retirement, Kevin found joy in nature, spending his days at home with his wife and their dogs. Together they enjoyed watching sports, and cheering on the Jets, and Blue Bombers. He cherished moments serenading Kelly with their favourite songs and enjoying their shared love for music.
A celebration of Kevin's life will be held in July at Muriel Lake, Kenora. For those wishing to attend, please email Allison at allison213@hotmail.com for details.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Thunder Bay Cancer Care or Kenora District Hospital in Kevin's honour.
Kevin will be remembered by his gentle soul, and will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. May he rest in peace.
