John R. Maunder
June 16, 1933 - January 2, 2012
John accepted his final curtain call on January 2, 2012, in the beautiful Palliative Care Room at Birchwood Terrace Nursing Home, surrounded by music and with his daughter by his side.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Frida (Lagerquist), and daughter, Irene. John also leaves behind: his brother-in-law, F.W. Clare Lagerquist and wife, Ruth, of Riverdale New Jersey, niece Karen Lagerquist of Trenton, New Jersey, cousin Murray Morgan (Linda) and family, and relatives in England.
John was predeceased by his parents John Walter (Jack) and Irene Mary Douglas (Knowlton) Maunder. His sister, Edith Vivian Maunder passed away prior to John's birth. Relatives Helen Morgan, (Sid), her brother Bob Wilson, and in-laws Irene and Clarence Lagerquist also predeceased him.
Born in Port Arthur, Ontario, he received his education there, and began a career with Ontario Hydro, retiring July 1, 1990. John worked in Ear Falls, Pickle Lake, Cameron Falls, Deep River, Thunder Bay and Kenora. John met his soul mate, Frida Lagerquist, in England, and they were happily married in Richmond Hill, Ontario on January 11, 1958.
John's wide range of interests included: scouting, aeromodelling, sailing, stained glass, oil painting, gardening, making traditional wines, and inventing all manner of things. John and Frida designed and built a cottage on Longbow Lake. Travels across Canada, the U.S., and England were enjoyed, along with wonderful memories of camping, canoeing, and summer at the lake.
A man of great faith, singing in the St. Alban's Cathedral Choir was one of the loves of his life. An ambassador of music and the performing arts, John was an active member in: The Lakehead Choral Group, The Lakehead Amateur Musical Productions, The Music Men, The Foremen Four, The Island Voices, The Other Mother's Sons, The New Horizons Seniors' Choir, The Sunset Country Handbell Ringers and Quartet, Lake of the Woods Concert Group, Trylight Theatre, SNOB, and a member of the Winnipeg Gilbert and Sullivan Society.
Cancer slowed John down in 2000, but his passion for music carried him forward until 2007, when he suffered a stroke. He spent his latter days at Birchwood Terrace and never lost his love of family or music.
Heartfelt thanks go out to Drs. J. Spielman, J.E. Beveridge, B. Bowerman, the caring Birchwood Terrace staff, as well as family and friends for your love and support.
"Well done good and faithful servant." Mark 25:21

High Flight
Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up up the long delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace,
Where never lark, or even eagle, flew;
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
- John Gillespie Magee, Jr.
