Gerry was born on October 29, 1950 in Kenora, Ontario. Gerry attended Lakewood High School where he led the Lakewood Mustangs football team to 3 consecutive championships. He attended North Dakota University for 4 years. After a brief stint with the Saskatchewan RoughRiders of the CFL he returned to his hometown to work at the Ontario-Minnesota Pulp and Paper Company. After moving to Thunder Bay, Gerry worked as a labourer for many years before finding employment at Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital, a position he would hold for the rest of his career. Gerry was an avid sports fan, cheering on his New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Buccaneers until his final days. Through his football coaching at many levels, in particular FWCI, he touched the lives of countless young athletes.
Gerry is survived by his wife Netta Calvert; son Gerry Calvert-Shaw (Amanda); granddaughters Sophie and Emma; parents Gord and June Shaw (Conlon); brothers Dale Shaw (Vicki Potvin) and Terry Shaw (Patricia); mother-in-law Iris Calvert; sisters-in-law Leah Vanderwey, Heather Duncan, Cathi Siemieniuk (Henry); brother-in-law Dan "Boomer" Calvert (Cheryl); as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by brothers-in-law Bill Duncan and Jerry Vanderwey; and father-in-law Daniel Calvert.
As per Gerry’s wishes, cremation has taken place and funeral services will be held on Friday, September 24, 2021 at 11:00am. Interment will follow at Stanley Hill Cemetery.
COVID-19 Protective measures are still being applied in group settings. Masks or face coverings are mandatory and social distancing of 6 feet is mandatory for those attending the service.
If friends desire, donations can be made in memory of Gerry to Pro Kids Thunder Bay in lieu of flowers.
