March 9, 1923 – January 5, 2023
Blessed with longevity and a full life, a World War II Veteran peacefully passed away Thursday, January 5, 2023. He was two months short of his 100th birthday.
George was predeceased by his wife Mona, his parents Tom and Hannah Lee and his brother Ernie.
Left to mourn him are his step son Allan (Maria) Perron; his grandchildren; Adena (Brad) Madison and Andrew (Marley) Perron. Also eight great-grandsons, who called him Grandpa George, Ashton, Noah, Grayden and Owen Madison; Jacob, Connor, Sullivan and Jamieson Perron. He could not believe he had eight great-grandsons! He is also survived by his niece Deborah D’Amour of Ottawa.
George was born in Blaine Lake, Saskatchewan, coming to Kenora at the age of six. He loved his country, enlisting in the Air Force at nineteen; serving from 1942 to 1946.
His attitude of service and dedication was transferred to the Kenora Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, where he took on many roles over the years. It became his second home after his wife’s passing.
George served with the Canadian Forces Reserves as a cadet Instructor from 1959 to 1975. During his terms as Sergeant at Arms for Northwestern Ontario and Manitoba, he took great pride in training many colour parties. Being a stickler for manuals and protocol, he set a very high standard and was always striving for excellence.
During their 36 years of marriage Mona and George enjoyed many road trips in their small RV van, travelling in Canada and the US, and visiting many Legion Branches, KDA’s and casinos. After Mona’s passing Allan became George’s chauffeur, taking him three or four times a year to the Shooting Star Hotel.
For the past six years George has resided in Pinecrest Home for the Aged, where he was well cared for by the staff in Unit 3. We are truly grateful and thank you all.
A Celebration of Life will take place at the Kenora Legion on Thursday, January 19, 2023 at 11:00 am with Pastor Cathy Giroux officiating.
