Ethel Duffield
With her four children by her side, Ethel passed away peacefully at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital on April 4, 2011 at the age of 80 years.
She will be lovingly remembered by her four children: Debra and Roy Teahan
(Ryan and Jill Teahan, Cory Teahan and Kayla Edison, Sean Teahan and Joni Meier), Donna Duffield (Donnelly Goold and Mary Faucett, Erin Goold and Dennis James), Sandra and Allan Derouard (Nicole and Dylan Chassie, and Marc Derouard), Scott and Marilyn Duffield (Blake Duffield, Joel Duffield, Lauren Duffield and Jess Trent).
Left to remember their “Nana Duff” are her great-grandchildren: Oliver and Logan Teahan, Nathyn and Jaicey Meier and Keinan Teahan, Ozzy Goold, Sophie James, Marshall and Jett Chassie.
Also left to cherish her memory is her sister, Stella Leiterman, nieces Karen and Janis and her nephew Mark and their families.
Mom touched many lives and had many special friends. Her best friend Irma Milko, her Benidickson “family”, her past co-workers from the Daily Miner and News, as well as many others too numerous to mention. She held a special place in her heart for each and every one of you. Mom and Irma spent tireless hours volunteering for the Canadian Cancer Society as well as other charities. “The Golden Girls” were involved with many aspects of the organization of activities as well as being the voices of advocacy for their Benidickson community.
Ethel was pre-deceased by her husband Bill, her parents Annie and Hugh Round, her brother-in-law Ronald Leiterman, as well as numerous extended family members.
Mom was born on April 2, 1931 in Assiniboia, Sask, but lived in Bromhead, Sask. surrounded by her Mother’s extended family. The prairie girl and her family moved to North Bay and Sioux Lookout finally settling in Fort William, Ontario.
As a young girl, Mom discovered a passion and talent for music. She played the guitar, bugle, French horn and trumpet. As a member of Maurice Jackson’s All Girl Band, she travelled from coast to coast and met every troop train entertaining the troops during the war years. After High School she completed Business College.
Mom joined the Air Force during WWII and had the honour of acing her exams as the only female taking the Air Traffic Control course. She got her discharge from the Air Force so that she could marry the love of her life, Bill Duffield, after much courting and persistence on our Dad’s part.
As a young and adventurous couple, Mom and Dad brought their young family to Graham, Ont., Fort William, Ont., Baker Lake N.W.T., finally settling in Kenora in 1967.
Mom was employed with the Daily Miner and News for 27 years, finally retiring to spend time with Dad and her ever-expanding family.
Many happy years were spent enjoying special times with her family camping, travelling, exploring Lake of the Woods, time spent at Spruce Island Camp, pontooning on Black Sturgeon, fishing, giving wise and humourous counsel to her children, grandchildren (and their friends), and puttering with Dad in her beloved garden. Friends were always welcome and fed anytime during the day or night. If Mom’s dining room table could talk, such tales it would tell!
It is impossible to condense the life of such a vibrant, loving and giving person into a few short paragraphs. Mom’s sense of humour, eternal optimism and quiet faith was a gift to all who had the pleasure of knowing her. We are proud to aspire to the legacy Mom has left us with.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, April 08, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at Bethesda Lutheran Church with Pastor Cathy Giroux officiating.
At Mom’s request in lieu of flowers, please make donations to a charity of choice.
