March 1, 1964 - December 3, 2016
It is with great sadness that the family of David Gus Hulmes announce his passing on Saturday December 3, 2016. David passed quietly in his sleep, at home with his family by his side.
David was predeceased by his parents Irene and Ivor Hulmes and his mother-in-law and father-in-law Genevieve and Albert Gallik.
David will be lovingly remembered by his wife Carrie “Bug”, daughters Jennifer (Mitch) and Jade-Ann (Tristan), siblings: Sue (Jim) Rivers, JoAnne (Jim) Rivington, Gail (Louie) Bacskai, George (Diana) Hulmes; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Teresa Gallik, Rita & Doug Perrault, Ellen Gallik, Tommy (Rhonda) Gallik, Timmy (Colleen) Gallik, Rosie & Aaron Gropp, Jamie (Tara) Gallik, aunts, uncles, cousins, numerous nieces and nephews and friends. He will also be missed by his canine boys, Machida and Grouzer.
David was born in Kenora, remained in Kenora and actually never left Essex Road. David was the youngest of five children. Growing up in the sticks he spent days on end fishing and swimming at the bridge with the other kids. In his teens he developed a passion for anything with a motor and loved getting his hands dirty. He did auto body work, painted numerous vehicles and big equipment. In his twenties David went to work with his dad, Ivor – Ivor Hulmes & Sons Contracting. In 2000 David and Bug purchased the company and have had many successful years in business. Some of the bigger jobs were demo of Rabbit Lake School and the old Public Works building, relocating the train to the CPR Train Museum and repairing the huge washout at CN Rail in Redditt in 1994. Dave was very capable at maintaining, repairing and operating any equipment but his favourite piece of equipment was his 325 CAT hoe. He had such a knack with it; it was like his third arm. Dave loved landscaping and did so with such detail and finesse - he was a true artist.
When he wasn’t working you could usually find him playing in his ‘giant sandbox on the hill with all his giant Tonka toys”. He enjoyed video games, loved 80’s music, jokes, and stories and socializing with everyone.
Dave cherished ALL his girls – Bug, Jen and Jade. Dave and Bug met in 1985 and decided to marry after 30 years – “thought it just might work out”...LOL
The family would like to thank Dr. Beveridge, the exceptional staff members at the LWDH Chemo Dept, and a special thanks to Chemo nurse Candice for her quick action and help with David in his last few days.
David had a big personality; he was so funny and loved to laugh. David was kind, loyal and generous. We will really miss you David “Hulmzee”, rest in peace.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chemotherapy Department at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital.
A Celebration of Life will be held for David at the Rosewood Room, Clarion Hotel in Lakeside on December 17, 2016 from 11:00 am-2:00 pm.
