Charles Galloway
Charles passed away on Sunday, September 18, 2011 at Pinecrest Home for the Aged in his 90th year.
He was born in Keewatin, Ontario on November 18th,1921 to Frances and Cecil Galloway.
Charles attended both elementary and secondary school in Keewatin. For his matriculation year it was necessary to travel to Kenora.
Prior to his enlistment in the Royal Canadian Air Force, Charles worked for a short time at the Canadian Car and Foundry in Fort William, where Hawkes Hurricane Fighter Aircraft were made. Charles served for three years in the RCAF. Upon discharge he attended Queen’s University receiving his teaching degree and in later years received his B.A. at Lakehead University with a history major.
Charles started his teaching career in a country school near New Market, Ontario. It was there he met and married Bernice Rutledge in 1952; returning to Kenora in 1956, Charles continued teaching at Norman and Evergreen schools retiring in 1979. He enjoyed his association with the RTO and looked forward to their luncheons.
Charles’ passion was reading books and newspapers. His interests included hockey, tennis and canoeing in which he actively participated until poor health prevented him from doing so. Charles was proud of his Irish ancestry, making four trips to Ireland visiting family and enjoying the countryside. His trip to China was a highlight.
He was predeceased by his parents, wife Bernice, son Danny, daughter-in-law Cheryl, sister Audrey DeNure and brother-in-law Alex Brown.
Left to mourn his passing are his daughter Judy Galloway of Vancouver, sister Frances Brown of Kenora, brother Norman (Donalda) Galloway of Thunder Bay; grandchildren Jacqueline DeHaan of Edmonton, Joella (Chris) DaCosta of Caledon, Ontario, Jayme Galloway of Winnipeg; brother-in-law Merv DeNure of Port Perry; great grandchildren Eric & Calleigh. Also left to mourn several nieces and nephews.
Charles’ faith was a focal point in his life and he was an active and faithful member of the Berean Baptist Church.
His presence will be missed.
Palbearers will be Michael Falk, John Brown, Jack Cederlund, Curtis Sutherland, Bill Downey and Don Fedus.
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 23, 2011 at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre.
