November 23, 1938 – August 25, 2023
It is with deepest sadness that the family of Carol Louise Horley (nee Day) born on November 23,1938 announces her passing on August 25, 2023.
Carol was born in Oak Park, Illinois to Marion and John Day.
Carol was first introduced to the beauty of Lake of the Woods when she was eight years old. Her family came to Sioux Narrows for a summer vacation and stayed at the Maple Leaf Lodge, an island camp located in Whitefish Bay. After many summers Marion and John purchased Maple Leaf Lodge and together they and their children ran the camp.
It was during this time that Carol met the love of her life- Robert Horley. Robert was captivated by Carol and was impressed that she owned and operated her own boat. The two shared a strong sense of faith and after many Sunday dates to church Robert proposed. The two married and enjoyed a two week canoeing honeymoon.
Robert and Carol settled into married life in a quaint cabin on the Sanctuary Island on which Robert and his parents had established a home and a tourist resort. Carol, despite of being a city girl thrived in this environment. She loved nature and loved the life that she and Robert created there. She was taken by the ever present beauty and the quiet peacefulness. Together they raised their four children, Robert Jr, Susan, Will and Peter. They instilled their love of nature and conservation into their children and that legacy will be carried forward. Carol and Robert continued on with the family resort and were instrumental in sharing the wonders of Lake of the Woods to many people. After Robert passed in 2003, Carol with the help of her youngest son Peter continued to run The Sanctuary Resort. Carol was happy to share her beloved island with family and guests up until her passing.
Carol will be fondly missed for her quiet grace, her strength and determination, her Christmas caramels that she lovingly made for her family each and every Christmas, and most of all for the loving example of a mother that she exuded. She dedicated her life to her family and we could not be more grateful.
Carol was predeceased by her husband Robert (2003) and her daughter Susan (2004).
She leaves to mourn son Rob (Lois), son-in-law Bill Harrison, son Will (Melaine), son Peter (Tanya), grandchildren Mya Horley (Josh), Colin Horley, Chelsea Devolin (Greg), Derek Harrison (Masha), Brock Harrison (Emily),Spencer Caruso (Maddie), special nieces and nephew Kim, Martha, Jamie, Kathy & Chris.
Rest in Peace mom we all love you and feel so grateful to have been blessed with you in our lives.
Many thanks to the nurses and staff at The Lake of the Woods Hospital who cared for Carol in her final days. Your dedication and caring is much appreciated by the family.
Services will be held at the Lake of the Woods Chapel in Sioux Narrows on Friday, September 15th, 2023 at 11:00 am with Pastor Pat Chabluk officiating. Interment will follow at the Pineridge Cemetery in Sioux Narrows. A luncheon to follow at the community hall for all whom wish to join in the celebration of Carol.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choosing - (last Christmas instead of family gifts Carol donated to Operation Smile in hopes of changing the lives of two children).
May the peace of God that passeth all understanding,
Keep your hearts and minds in in Jesus Christ.
