was born on January 18, 1939, in Manhattan, New York to Charles and Mary Cassaro. He loved being
raised in Manhattan and often shared tales of all the fond memories from 9th Street as well as giving
tours of the old neighborhood. He moved from New York to California and eventually ended up in
Georgia with his wife, Diana, and their girls.
Sal was a Jack of all trades and had numerous jobs throughout his life. The stories of his many work
endeavors entertained loved ones for years. Eventually, he settled in with Air Canada where he worked
for over 30 years, making great friends and loving memories along the way.
Sal raised two families in his life and was a true family man. Spending time with his children and
grandchildren was always his top priority. He loved attending the kids’ sporting events and recitals,
swimming in his pool and playing endless hours of cards. But most of all he loved cooking for family,
especially his famous meatballs. Sal always had projects with his grandchildren, such as woodworking
and constructing items from scraps. He also had an incredible bond with his mother-in-law, Memaw.
They spent hours playing pinnacle and swapping stories. He was the only person who could make her
grilled cheese just right.
Traveling was a passion that Sal shared with Diana and loved all the trips she would plan for them.
Some of his favorites were traveling to Italy, Ireland, and cruising through the French wine country. Sal
chartered his own sailboat in Greece as “Captain” while instructing Diana and the girls how to be the
“perfect” crew members. He was constantly flying or driving all over the country to visit family and was
ready at a moment’s notice.
He was a wordsmith that could solve unsolvable crossword puzzles. He enjoyed games, cards with
family and friends, was a great singer and dancer, and was a sharp-dressed man who loved
experiencing life. Sal enjoyed great conversation with all. He was always very positive, kind, and
respectful of others. Many times, a disagreement would turn into an enjoyable, long conversation with
a loved one.
Sal was a devout Catholic who loved his faith. He attended St. Catherine of Siena, where the homilies
resonated with him the most. One of his great pleasures was attending mass with all his family
followed by a great Sunday feast. He also really enjoyed the trip he and his wife took to
Ireland with Father Tommy where they relished experiencing their catholic faith in another country.
