Ruth Haven Mooney went home to be the Lord on February 16th, 2023, at the age of 93.
She was born in Tampa, FL to her parents George Washington Haven and Edna Hankins Haven. She attended and graduated from Plant High School in Tampa, and later returned there to attend her 50 year class reunion. While in high school, she met and married the love of her life, Ira Frank Mooney, also from Tampa, FL. They eventually moved to Acworth, GA for him to begin employment at Lockheed Georgia, where he also retired. They raised three daughters in Acworth and lived the rest of their lives there.
After settling in Acworth, Ruth joined Acworth United Methodist Church as her church home in the early 1950’s. She raised her three daughters (Dottie, Fran, and Leigh) there, and remained an active member throughout her life. While there, she encouraged others in their faith journey, attended Sunday School, was an active member of the United Methodist Women, attended Disciple Bible studies I, II, III, and IV, as well as numerous other Bible studies, and volunteered in the church office for several years. Ruth loved to sing, and was an active member in the choir for 50 years. She was later active in the Celebration Singers for seniors who sang in church, and would also go out into the community and sing at Assisted Living and Nursing Home facilities bringing hope and joy to others who are unable to attend church services.
She loved to travel and was always ready for the next adventure. She and her husband and daughters camped and water skied at Lake Allatoona often. She would roll her three daughters’ hair beside the campfire on Saturday nights in preparation for church on Sunday, attend church and go back to the campsite on Sunday.
She loved plants and flowers, was a member of the Azalea Garden in Cobb County, and won ribbons at the North Georgia State Fair for her flower arrangements. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader while her daughters were active. She loved to sew and crochet, and made clothing and other items for herself, family, and friends. Frank was an active Shriner for many years, and she attended numerous parades, activities, conventions, and trips with him, some of which included transportation by motorcycle. They later enjoyed making crafts together, and attending and selling items at craft fairs around the North Georgia area.
She had part time jobs while raising her family, including substitute teacher at Acworth Elementary School, and Rich’s department store at Cobb Center in Marietta. She later worked full time, 10 years with the IRS in Chamblee, GA and retired from Dobbins Air Force Base after working 10 years in the civilian payroll department. She also worked for many years at the Cobb County voting polls.
Frank and Ruth were loving parents to their three daughters Dottie Gravitt (Benny), Fran Ford (Walter), and Leigh Halbrooks (Billy), and also adored and enjoyed spending time with their 13 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 3 great great-grandchildren.
Ruth was a beautiful soul, had a zest for life, loved the Lord, and lived each day to the fullest. She was dearly loved by family and friends, and will be missed by all. Our comfort is in the blessed assurance that she is resting in peace and singing with the Lord.
