Mark Miller of Acworth, Georgia, passed away on January 30, 2025, at the age of 75. Mark was born in Maywood, Illinois and was son of the late Darline and Roland Miller. His family moved to Florida when he as a young boy, eventually settling down in West Palm Beach. He is survived by his wife Jamie (Jeannie) Thomson Miller and his sister Debi (Phil) Foss of Lake Forrest, Illinois, brothers-in-law James Richard Thomson, Eric (Catherine) Thomson, John (Beth) Thomson, and sister-in-law Deborah Thomson as well as several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
Mark attended the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, for one year, where he excelled in leadership skills and marksmanship. He transferred to West Palm Beach Junior College the following year. While working in a boat yard, he was offered a position as a first mate on the Milky Way, a private yacht owned by Jack Abeel who owned several insurance agencies and spent the following year working his way up the east coast. During that time, he met many celebrities including Johanthan Winters and Jimmy Dean and had many memorable experiences being on the ocean. Upon returning home, he entered the University of Florida where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science.
Mark worked as a flight line manager at the Gainesville Airport, a job he loved, prior to moving to the Atlanta area. He worked in purchasing at John Harland, Northern Telecom and Georgia Institute of Technology and later became the Administrative Manager for Georgia Tech’s physics department, where he had a positive impact on professors and students.
Following his retirement, Mark spent many hours volunteering at the Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield Park. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award and the President’s Volunteer Services Award during this time. He enjoyed meeting visitors and working with staff and other volunteers and made many friends while there.
As a younger man, Mark’s hobbies included running and playing on softball teams, often more than once in a year. He was an avid sports fan, and his favorite teams were the Florida Gators, the Miami Dolphins, and the Minnesota Vikings. Above all he had a love for boating and the ocean and a passion for deep sea fishing. He took his final fishing trip in Destin Florida in October 2024 with his dear friend, John Isaacs. While unable to fish due to his deteriorating health, he thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Mark had a great sense of humor and made friends easily. He will be missed by many. Family and close friends will hold a private Celebration of Life.
