Born in New York City on May 22, 1924 to Mary Agnes and William John Collins. Mrs. Whalen was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was predeceased by her husband Joseph Edward Whalen a Tugboat Captain, who she was married to for 48 years. Being direct and frank in nature, everyone enjoyed her colorful personality. A witty neighbor, she was always friendly and has many long term friends. She enjoyed a game of cards with her family and the one arm bandit in the casino. She shared a love of jewelry with her grandaughter [and held the title of gold dust twin], but most especially she enjoyed having a man servant in her a son in law Kevin.
Survivors: Three children- Daughter, Catherine and husband Kevin Coyle; Daughter -Margaret Cassidy; Son -Joseph E. Whalen; Three grandchildren- Tarajean and husband Jim Moore; Colleen Cassidy and Timothy Cassidy; Great-grandchildren- Thomas Cassidy and Alexander Moore. Sister, Cornelia and husband Wallace Reed; sister-in-law Stephanie Whalen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Mass will be held Friday February 18, 2011 at 10:30 am from the St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church of Kennesaw, GA., with Father John Matejek officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday February 17, 2011 at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home Kennesaw, Ga. (770) 422-7299 Out of Town Services will be held at Thomas F. Dalton Funeral Home Monday, February 21, 2011 in New Hyde Park N.Y. (516)354-0634 . The burial will follow Tuesday February 22, 2011 at 11 am from the Pinelawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Farmingdale, New York.
