At 96, Marcia Rubel was still a beauty with an eye for fashion, a taste for good – even not-so-good – wine, and an appreciation of the arts. She was well-read, smart as a whip, and could usually beat her family at Jeopardy. Marcia enjoyed the theater and going to museums. She could sit for hours listening to opera while working on crossword puzzles. Until diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer, Marcia was in better shape than many people twenty years her junior. She attributed her longevity to a healthful diet, daily exercise and good genes.
In her early twenties she was introduced to Marvin Rubel, a handsome fellow who worked in NY’s garment industry. With their first date aboard Marvin’s Lightning class sailboat, Marcia was hooked. They fell in love, forged a relationship, ultimately married and had two children. Over the years, Marcia became a proficient sailor in her own right, winning several trophies. The couple worked their way from a 19’ daysailer to a 42’ Hinckley sou’wester, perfect for cruising. Docked at Sheepshead Bay’s Miramar Yacht Club, sailing and the lifestyle it afforded was their passion.
Sadly, Marvin passed away in 1971. Having two children to support, Marcia honed her skills to find employment. With a strong work ethic, great typing skills (this is pre-computers) and a knack for shorthand, Marcia landed interesting jobs. Her background was with the corporate headquarters of National Shoes in The Bronx. When widowed she chose to work close to home and found an interesting position with the dean of admissions at Brooklyn College. She then went on to become the assistant to the medical director at NY’s first federally-qualified HMO.
Over the years, Marcia lived in Massachusetts, California, Florida and ultimately Georgia. Through it all, she remained an ardent New Yorker, always on the hunt for good Chinese food. (One gets spoiled, living in Brooklyn!)
Marcia passed away on April 14th, 2023. She is survived by daughter Meredith Rubel (married to Theron Stancil, Jr.) and son Richard Rubel (married to Janet Rubel.) Marcia was blessed with three accomplished and beautiful granddaughters: Mia Rubel Larrabee, Chloe Rubel Huang and Skye Rubel, all living in NY. Soon before passing, Marcia was thrilled to meet her first great-grandbaby, Mia’s adorable daughter Margaux.
The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful work of Agape Hospice and specifically Lori Sanders RN, who helped them muddle through a difficult time. If so inclined, donations in memory of Marcia Rubel, are gratefully accepted by Agape Hospice Care Foundation; 1395 S. Marietta Pkwy., Building 750, Marietta GA 30067.
