Larry Parris, 73, a lifelong resident of Acworth, GA, passed away Sunday, November 19th. He was our beloved husband, father, Pop, fishing buddy, friend and he will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure to know him.
Larry loved Acworth, only leaving to honor his county. He severed in the Air Force during the Vietnam War, stationed in Gaum, and was recognized for his exemplary conduct and duty performance.
He spent a short time living in Florida before returning to Acworth. During his time in Florida, he went on a blind date and met the love of his life, his wife Carol. They spent the next 50 years married, raising a family, and pursuing life together.
Most of his early years he could be found fishing from Lake Acworth or Lake Allatoona, that proved to be true for his later years as well. Being an avid fisherman his whole life he learned to fish for brim, catfish, bass, and finally, his greatest love, crappie. Eventually earning him the nickname Crappie Pappy.
Larry enjoyed an array of other hobbies as well as fishing. He picked up golfing, hunted, and spent some time in a bowling league. He enjoyed watching sports and loved Alabama football, ROLL TIDE! But his greatest passion was watching his grandson Lucas play baseball and granddaughter Grace play soccer.
He retired from Kennesaw State University after 25 years. He was proud of his accomplishments there, such as his work on the web registration program. Most of all, he was proud of the lifelong friendships he gained during his tenure.
Larry was a man of faith, knowing Jesus as his savior. He was an active member of Pickett’s Mill Baptist Church for the last 23 years. During his time there he found different ways to serve, and dearly loved all the people of Pickett’s Mill.
Larry is survived by his loving wife, Carol Parris, his daughter Robin Bowman, son-in-law Michael Bowman, grandchildren Lucas and Grace Bowman, nephew Chuck Rucker, and niece Laurie Pierce.
He is preceded in death by his father Ernest Parris, mother Mattie Lee Parris, and sister Linda Rucker.
The family will receive friends and family during visitation on Sunday, November 26th from 1pm to 3pm at Pickett’s Mill Baptist Church in Dallas, GA. A service honoring his life will immediately follow visitation at the church.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.winkenhoferpineridgefuneralhome.com for the Parris family.
