John Christian Nicholson, 30, of Acworth, GA, passed away suddenly on Thursday, January 11, 2024 from injuries sustained in a traffic accident near Fort Liberty, NC.
John will be remembered for his strength of character, perseverance, courage, dedication to duty, and his love of God, country, and family. His generosity to all and his compassion for the less fortunate touched the lives of many. He leaves behind the cherished memories of a wonderful son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, uncle, fellow soldier, and friend.
Among his countless achievements, he was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout by the Boy Scouts of America. He is a 2011 graduate of Harrison High School in Kennesaw, GA, where he was a 4-year JROTC cadet. John was selected into the nation’s largest Army ROTC program at the University of North Georgia where he excelled. Graduating in 2015, he then completed the Army’s Basic Officer Leadership Course and was commissioned as an officer into the active duty Army. Throughout his career in the Army, which included overseas tours in Afghanistan and Jordan, his ongoing commitment to his duties brought him many accolades including the Field Artillery Officer’s diploma, the Signal Corps Officer’s diploma, the Army Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Army Achievement Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Armed Forces Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Parachutist Badge, the Air Assault Badge, the Army Meritorious Service Medal, and promotion to the rank of Captain.
John is preceded in death by his brother Marty. He is survived by his parents, Lucy and Martin; a sister, Natalie Giles and brother-in-law Ryan; a niece, Laila Giles; brothers, William and Joseph; many adoring aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The family will receive friends for a visitation and rosary on Sunday, January 28, 2024 from 3pm until 6pm at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, January 29, 2024 at 12:00pm at St. Vincent De Paul Roman Catholic Church in Dallas, GA, followed by a reception in the church fellowship hall. Interment will take place on Tuesday, January 30, 2024 at 2:00pm at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA. with Military Honors.
