John Hewitt Erikson passed away peacefully at his home in Kennesaw, GA on June 19, 2016, with his loving wife of 55 years, Judith Kay Erikson by his side. John was born on April 26, 1933 in Battle Creek, Michigan, the first son of John (Jack) Henry Erikson and Marion Elizabeth (Ensign) Erikson. He grew up in Battle Creek, with his parents and younger siblings, Tom and Charlotte, and went to Battle Creek Central High School. He joined the Air Force at the age of 17 and served in the Korean War as a teletype operator. After being honorably discharged, he attended Ferris State College in Big Rapids, Michigan. He and Judy met on a blind date in 1959 and were married in 1960. They went on to have three children, John Carl Erikson (Andrea) of Acworth, GA, Wendy Erikson (Jeff Siegel) of Woodstock, NY and David Erikson (Suzette), of Temecula, CA. They later welcomed 7 grandchildren and one great Grandchild.
John spent his professional career as a computer programmer and systems analyst. He loved fishing and was an expert fly-fisher, and especially enjoyed the times he spent fishing with his sons in his beloved Alaska. He loved camping, hunting and canoeing; with his brother and father, his college friends and his family, also traveling extensively in a camper with Judy in their later years. He had a great love of hockey (both watching and playing), and rarely missed a chance to watch his beloved Detroit Red Wings. He loved Broadway musicals and he also enjoying photography, reading and playing chess. John had a love for life and adventure and shared that passion with the family he loved so much.
John will be welcomed into heaven by his first Grandson, John Paul (b. Dec.10, 1986-d.Feb. 3, 1987), and is survived by his grandchildren Jeremy, Ryan, Lucas, Ethan, Anna and Olivia and great-grandson, Ryker Pace. In addition to his wife, children and grandchildren, John is survived by his sister, Charlotte Ann Bomma of Fort Myers, Florida, and pre-deceased by his parents and his brother, Thomas Scott Erikson. He also leaves many cousins, nieces and nephews, family members and friends.
